Did a search on this and didn't find anything, if there, sorry -

I am considering trying short term fostering for Humane Society. My Shiba is 1.8mo. old male.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience bringing in short term foster with their Shiba.

He is extremely well socialized, friendly and has dogs over to the house at least once a week for agility class we do here. He has ZERO guarding issues. (will see if that will hold if the dog comes INSIDE the house and curls up on the sofa :)

Assuming the foster is nice dog, wondering if any downsides? I worked extremely hard and spent lots of $ on classes to have a well behaved dog and he's awesome right now.

I wonder that because he's not quite "grown up" if I could screw anything up before his personality is kind of "set" at around 2 to 2.5 years.

I have tons of crates, two separate yards. We live where it is year round warm and would have dog outside, crate, ex-pen or very close supervision. I will be able to be home almost all the time.

I'm hoping will give Koji new experiences, playmate etc...and give the shelter dog a break from kennel crazies...these are healthy adoptable dogs. I don't want to undo all hard work I've done.

I also have learned so much from this forum and from all classes/books while raising Koji that I might be a good influence on the foster and would be able to talk to new owner (they encourage you to bring foster to adoption events)

Any thoughts/experiences?
Mahalo

I searched the forum for "barking" but way too many results came up to filter through, so I'll just post this here. Lately, for probably the last 6 months, Etsuko's territorial awareness has SKYROCKETED! When someone walks through the yard or another dog comes in the yard or even when she hears dogs barking, Etsuko starts to bark/whine/howl/yodel all crazy like jumping all over the couches running back and forth between the bedrooms... What could be the cause of this?

She is 2ish years old, walked regularly and very active. Sometimes to help relieve her tension I let her out in the backyard so she can inspect her territory... Now, I feel like this has backfired on me because she EXPECTS to be let out every time she hears something...

Any advice on what to do? Or should I do nothing at all? Perfectly normal behavior? I love Etsuko to death but this gets annoying, her bark is insanely loud and more often than not she scares the sh*t out of me because she will bark out of nowhere...

Hello everyone. I hope you and your Shibas are doing well. Its been quite sometime since I've been here and I really like the new look of the forums. Thumbs up.

Anyway...both our Shibas are doing great. Zaius just turned 13yo in January and still acts like he is 5 and Leeloo has become quite the beauty and intellect. We were at the vet today and they gave me her stats. I am actually amazed by how big she got. She is 17" tall and weighed in at 35lbs and she is not even a year and a half. We got her from a show dog breeder as well so I'm actually taken back by how big she is.

That gets me to my first question. She is about 5-7lbs overweight. We have been working on it for the last 2 months by adding another walk at mid day. Total walk time for a day is around 2hrs, plus throwing the ball around the house and rope tug etc. We unfortunately don't have a fence in yard so we do have to walk them. I currently feed her 1cup of Merrick Wilderness Blend dry food with about a 1/4" cup of Wellness/Evangers 95% wet food. These amounts are split between a morning feeding and an evening feeding. Basically they are fed every 12 hrs. Does anyone had a good recommendation for a low calorie dry food that I can replace the Merrick with?

Also over the last month we have noticed an odor from Leeloo...kind of a butt smell. Not gas...just like a butt smell if that makes sense. Does anyone know what this might be? I completely blanked about asking at the vet and I will call him tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this. Its not all the time but seems to be getting more frequent.

Thanks in advance.

So the other day, prior to a vet scheduled vet visit (check-up and shots), our dog "froze" near the backyard door. I took a couple iPhone videos, linked below, of what it looked like. We have no idea what caused this to happen and have only noticed this happen one other time. The other time was at night near the front door.

The first time it happened was a few months ago and we did not think anything of it. He stood, kind of frozen, gently shaking and alert. He wasn't spaced out or anything; he responded when I said his name and after a minute or so I said "walk" and walked to the spot I typically put his leash on and was fine. We went for a short walk and he acted normal; came back in the house and everything was OK. I think this happened when we had a house guest for a week or so which he was not too fond of.

The second time, when I took the videos, he had been outside and had just come in. He was stopped and frozen again; gently shaking (barely visible in the videos), tail down, and seemingly on alert-mode. I walked over to him and he walked back outside and stopped looking inward, which was when I decided to record the behavior. He stood like that for a couple minutes then sat down. He seemed content just observing the various noises (somewhat audible, but you can see his ears move) but I again interrupted him; I told him "come" and he followed me inside and was fine after though he did seem to walk in cautiously.

Since we had a vet appointment that day anyway, I brought it up with her. She said without any sort of pattern or consistency that it seems more along the lines of anxiety and that dogs sense, and hear, a lot of things humans do not. So while it makes little to no sense to us, to them there is "something" going on. Also, given the fact that he was responsive both times, she was not over-concerned, yet.

With all of this said, does anyone else's dog act similarly when spooked and if so what do you do? Let it run its course or snap him out of it with a command as I have done? Also, please excuse the homemade "doggie door" that he made for himself in the sliding screen door... haha =)

My breeder sent me pictures of my little guy today! He was born August 15th (not September, lol). She expects he'll turn out to be a red sesame (which was my second choice, after the rare and unexpected pure sesame, haha). Even if he ends up turning out to be a regular red, I have no complaints. Look at that face! :D :D

The second picture is of him and his sister (only 2 pups in the litter). I pick him up October 15th! (I decided to wait until the 15th due to a parvo problem in my area - I'd rather wait an extra two weeks and limit his potential exposure to known disease here)

I'm planning to name him Hammond (in honor of Richard from Top Gear and John from Jurassic Park XD), unless I get a way better idea or when I go to pick him up it doesn't seem like a good match. From the pictures I think it will work, though! (And I've already started buying him dinosaur-themed toys XD)

They didn't even eat. The puppy was cool and just barked couple times and ignored the cats.
I wonder if anybody had the same experience and if the cats got over it eventually and start acting normally. I felt so bad for the cats being so scared and uncomfortable in a house they lived all their lives in.
Please let me know if you have any advice for me when I actually buy the puppy..

So i want to throw out a question to you all. We've been looking to put Kona in training, not for anything horrible or anything, but to just continue our education. Now, Kona has gone to training classes before and has all his basics down: sit, down, stay, come (when he feels like it), heel, dance, shake (left and other paw), and loose leash walking (when there's not a rabbit in sight). But all of this is not our good doing. Kona's previous owners did all this (except other paw).

Well, it seems like the norm here at least (petco) is to start a dog at the lowest level regardless of previous training. I suppose i sort of understand the reasoning behind that, wantingto make sure that the style of training is the same/taught, and socialization is always a good thing, not to mention plumbing me for every dollar etc.

We are planning on checking out the other training groups in town, and see if they're the same, but until my husband and i get on the same schedule its petco or nothing. Both of the other groups in town only offer class during the week in the evenings. But both of us want to attend training. So, we've decided to brave the uncertainty that seems to be petco. We have met our local trainer and she seems both capable and friendly.

So i suppose my question is, Is this normal to not take previous education into acct when determining which level of class a dog should be in? It doesn't seem to be a total waste of money, because at the very least we can work on not jumping on strangers, and learning with distractions. But i do feel like its not as valuable as it could be.

What do you all think?

I'm wondering what people use as a collar for their Shiba? I'm looking for a collar that will not break open, and will be on Scout all the time. Scout will put significant pressure on it at times and in the past I've had the collars come open, though since I've been using the Bison model it has not happened. But it still is in the back of my mind and I'd prefer to have something I know will never open.

I've tried a harness with her but she acts like a zombie as I guess it is the thundershirt effect so a harness is not a possibility.
Foxy and I just moved a couple of days ago from one condo to another two doors away from our old one. It's been kind of crazy for her as I knew it would be while I'm running back/forth moving stuff. On the day that I had all our big stuff moved I had a friend take care of her who has a couple dogs that she loves. They bark at everyone walking by and when people come to the door. Foxy never did this before. She would run to the door and get excited when they would come in and want to greet them but never barked.

Now ever since spending the day with them, she is barking much more. I had a couple people come over to hook things up and she barked at them the entire time they were here from her crate. Now she's even barking at anyone she sees walking by the front window.

I will say that she doesn't bark at anyone along our walks or at other dogs barking at us so it seems it's more of a protective thing.

I'm curious if this is a new behavior that I'm going to have to live with or if it's just a phase while we are in this unsettled move..... Anyone have suggestions on how I can get her to not bark at people when they come over?

Why does he hate his harness?

So my dog hates his harness. Or more specifically, he doesn't want it put on him - once it's on he's fine and happy.

Basically, when I figure it's time to go for a walk, I go get harness & leash. Dog realizes this and goes and positions himself around the other side of the dining room table where he's figured out it's easy to avoid me by just keeping the table between us. He won't listen to sit commands, stay commands or anything else - it's basically an attempt to keep as far away from me as possible.

Eventually, I manage to herd him somewhere where I can get ahold of him and the harness on him (it's an Easy-Walk harness by the way). He turns his head to avoid it, but eventually I get the harness on. He then goes over to the door where he's willing to wait/sit etc. for me to attach the leash so we can go out.

This is really annoying. I thought dogs were supposed to be doing back flips out of excitement when it was time for a walk.

We introduced the harness with lots of treats. We treat him when the harness gets put on. He doesn't ever go outside without the harness, so you'd figure I've covered all the positive reinforcement bases for this thing. Yet he tries to avoid it whenever it comes out. And, once it's on - all is well.

Any suggestions on how to fix this neurosis?

Just wondering, how long should the loose stools last? Is there anything I can do to help her? I've been giving her a little bit of organic pumpkin puree with her food and it hasn't seemed to make a difference.

I've been researching puppy foods on this forum and am trying to find a better food for her to mix with what she is on now, and I think I will switch to Taste of the Wild instead of the nature's recipe :/..

I know that this has been a topic before and have scanned the forums profusely! My concern is that I am picking my puppy up this upcoming week, and the breeder has the puppy on a sams club type of kibble that he buys in bulk. I want to switch him to a good high quality food. So far I have bought a sample small bag of orijen puppy. My concerns are that after scanning and seeing around a few places that it is great quality, but also I'm concerned of hearing it has too much protein for a puppy? Besides that the negative for me was that it is very expensive. My other choices were wellness puppy, or one of the natural choice puppy formulas. I have one natural dog store by me but it mainly carries Acana dog food and Orijen, while I went with orijen because they had a puppy formula. Pet supplies plus carries wellness, and natures variety is pretty easy to find as well. I couldn't find innova evo near me though. I know to get small amounts because all puppies are different but can anyone suggest a good quality food that isn't very pricey like orijen? Worst comes to worst I'll stick with the price tag for orijen if it makes the puppy healthy and happy. The puppy will be 7 weeks old.

Thanks for your future input! I only want the best for my upcoming pup!
