So, I think my family and I are ready to start looking for breeders! Woo hoo!! We're located in Atlantic Canada, and we would be willing to make a trip into some of the North East States (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York.)
My parents were also looking at this breeder out in alberta (http://www.calgaryshibas.com/). Also... Bali H'ai in New York caught my eye (I thought I remembered someone talking about this kennel but I can't remember where...)
Anyone have really good experiences with any breeders in the areas we are looking? Any really bad ones? Any advice would be appreciated. :) Thanks!
I've heard people speak well of Bali H'ai. As far as Calgary goes, I see nothing on there about testing their breeding stock, despite the fact that they talk at length on their website about choosing a reputable breeder.
There are a couple breeders in Atlantic Canada and Eastern Canada, though I can't comment on their reputability. One is Akanami Shibas in NB and Arisu Shibas in PEI (http://www.arisushibas.com/)
A lot of breeders know each other, and could recommend you to one in your area.
@curlytails thanks for those links! Really helpful info/questions to ask.
@Nekopan I knew about Akanami and Arisu. I'm a little bit reserved about the lack of contact information for Arisu...and the complete lack of working website for Akanami. It is silly I know. A website doesn't really say much about the actual person and the reputability. Just a wonky first impression I guess xD
They're good people. So many good breeders don't have good sites, or any sites. That does make it harder for pet people to find, but most don't breed very often, and what they do breed may just be for show and breeding. I do think this is a huge reason why so many people go to the fancy sites with paypal buttons (which end up being mills) as they look much nicer and there are lots of cute puppy photos in baskets and such, and that lulls people into thinking the place is nice. You really need to just go meet whatever breeder you are interested in person so you can ask your questions and see the living conditions.
