I am currently feeding Akiva a 75/25 ratio of Natures Variety/Acana for all life stages. Vet said to get him on a puppy food. As the als food is not beneficial to him...hmmmm. He is 10 weeks old and 2 days and weighs 6.7 pounds. Any of your experience that you can share is greatly appreciated!
Lucy is now 9 months old and as fit as can be. We had her on acana grain free and natures variety raw at 10 weeks. Your fine with that food. The only thing tobe cautious with als food is the calcium\phosphorus levels but even that really only affects large breed dogs.
Remember that vets are not instructed very well on nutrition.
Smaller breeds, such as a Shiba will do fine on an ALS food as long is it is a good quality food. However, if you feel more comfortable putting your puppy on puppy food, feel free, just make sure to choose a good quality food.

I think the reason he said that is the high protein levels. There has been some argument about it causing kidney damage in younger dogs. From what I understand protien levels in some kibbles are higher than what a dog gets on RAW.
I went with wellness puppy when my dog was young. I liked that it had plenty of calcium, folic acids, and other nutrients that is very beneficial for young animals. After a year I switched kenshin to wellness core. I chose to go this way because I didn't want to risk, better safe than sorry.
