Width of stances

Looking through pics and having seen many different Shibas, I've noticed that some are pretty stout looking with wide stances while some are skinnier with narrower stances. I'm referring to same sex dogs here, I know that there are going to be some obvious difference male vs female; what I am talking about is how a male may have a thick or skinny and have a wide or narrow stance (front legs). Is the width of their stance just a genetic thing or do younger dogs fill-out later in life and have wider stances? Or is there some other reason they develop as such?

brewster has almost a pitbull stance...showing off his chest and i swear ive seen im flex some muscles when a female is nearby hahaha
  • Sukoshi has always had a relatively wide stance for a female. This may be the result of some of the "Chow" supposedly in her background.

Interesting! My female has a narrower stance and femine look. My male shiba, Saku is going to be 14-month old and he's been gaining a lot more muscle over the last couple of months. He has a wider stance but still far from a pitbull stance, more like a terrior stance!

@Saku you are right its more of a terrior set...sometimes he toes his paws inward slightly so its kind of bulldog-ish..hes very proud and knows hes a good looking dog and i think he trie s to show off at times

People always cracks up, because Hammond almost always stands in the "stacked" show-stance. I get asked a lot if I've been working with him for conformation, but nope! He just stands that way!

  • my boy is always in a "show"stance, (i mean you retired but you never forget) but its a really manly show stance, he stands with the whole "thats right look at me im the man" and its deffinately more pit bull than terrier, my boy is pretty solid to. i just love to look at him
