Do you ever give human food or table scraps to your shiba?

Just out of curiosity, do you give your shiba human food sometimes? We try to limit the amount we give and it's usually one or two bites during dinnertime. I know it's probably bad but I can't help to share and it's hard to deny those cute puppy eyes.To make me feel less guilty, just wonder if others do the same or do it all the time? :)

I prepare their meals from human grade ingredients. For me the question is do my Shibas ever share their food with me? My wife loves their home made chicken jerky. She says its so tasty.

In general, no. But sometimes i give them a piece of salad or fruits. My parents fed my sisters adopted min pin mix human food and he started to have seizures. After some vet visits and moving out of the house, the dog is much healthier and seizure free.

Yes, almost all of Conker's food is "human" food. He's on a highly home-made diet but right now he also gets The Honest Kitchen.

As far as table scraps go, not really. Due to his intolerances to many things, I generally don't give him anything unless it's something he cans safely eat. The other two dogs though, yep! All the time. They get anything that's not toxic to dogs.

Kenshin eats everything I eat that isn't toxic to dogs. I know a lot of people don't feed scraps, but I figure if it doesn't make them sick, why not? Dogs are scavengers, so I can't see how a varied diet would hurt. My family always fed table scraps, and we never had any problems.

And yes, Bowdu get table scraps that aren't too greasy, salty, spicy, etc. He really gets very little, maybe just a finger's worth of meat or the fruits and veggies he likes -- just enough to make it worth his while. We let him get away with it because he's silent and so very patient when he mooches. He's not so polite when any other dogs get in his territory while he's got his mooch on though. For us, that's been the main drawback to allowing this behavior. Luckily, Bowpi totally respects his space and stays out of the kitchen during dinner.

I wouldn't say Sakura gets table scraps as she is never fed from our dishes while at the table, however she regularly gets human food. She has allergies to poultry and grain so many of her 'treats' are 'human' food. She regularly gets the below,

    baby carrots
    bananas
    hard boiled eggs
    hot dogs
    apples
    cheese
    venison jerky
    peanut butter
    sometimes yougurt
    sometimes squash

What do my dogs eat that isn't people food? Not a whole lot. Occasionally I give them kibble as treats, and sometimes they get high quality dog treats, but otherwise, their entire diet is "people food." There favorite training treat is dried anchovies, which is also a human food.

They get (raw) meat from the butcher or grocery store, mostly chicken, but also fish and whatever else is on sale. They get a lot of table scraps too, mixed in with their meals, pretty much whatever we are eating that isn't bad for dogs (though there's not much we eat that would be bad for them, except for chocolate and sugarless gum). They've even eaten some pretty spicy stuff--just little bits of leftovers--and it hasn't seemed to bother them.

I figure if it doesn't hurt them, and I don't feed them too much, they should be fine.

we only give brewster tiny bits of healthy food we eat (chicken, tuna, crapmeat, fish, fruit etc) but only after we are done eating ourselves, its made it so he waits in the living room while we have a meal

Sevuk is on a home cooked diet, so everything he gets is people food (beef, chicken, pork, lamb, organ meat, eggs, fish, broccoli, carrots, sweet potatoes, yams, brown rice, fruits, cottage cheese, fish oil, etc). The only time that he doesn't get human food is when we've been really busy and haven't had time to cook him something. Plus he gets his thyroid meds in bits of cheese.

And we also do what shibamistress said, by adding in table scraps of whatever we're eating that isn't harmful to dogs.

Both Max and Maya are fed anything I'm eating wherever possible. They always have a bow ofl kibble, a bowl of fresh water, and a bowl of Newman's own canned food available to them.

There is not much I refuse them besides chocolate. They also get two greenies each per day.

They do not gorge on kibble or canned food that is always out for them and while they wait patiently for human food they do not beg and have never touched anything that was not given.

They especially love string cheese, white cheddar popcorn, and milo's kitchen beef jerky.

I also mix a raw egg in their canned food twice a week.

They are gorgeous animals and I receive many compliments on their appearance and their coats.

You might be surprised that they really control their own intake quite well and are very well mannered. My grandchildren can reach in while they are eating with no worries whatsoever of being growled at or nipped.

They are spoiled rotten. I would have it no other way.

Elwood & Sadie also get bites of whatever we happen to be eating, as long as it's healthy. They frequently get lean meat, veggies, fruits, string cheese, and occasionally rice/pasta (with no sauce). All of our training treats are also human food (steak, organic hot dogs, string cheese).

I don't give Saya food from the table if I do have a bit of something I'll put it in her dog bowl and give it to her like that.

Our last dogs were horrible beggers so we make sure they know to stay out of the dinning room and if they get something it'll be in their dog bowl.

I usually give Saya a bit of egg when I make scrambled eggs they're from a local farm and free range so I don't even add salt or pepper to it.

Saya loves sweet potatoes, cooked pumpkin and she also likes banana, peaches, pears, apples, zucchini, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, blue berries and raspberries she only likes them if they're cooked and blended.

She also loves coconut oil and shredded or flakes unsweetened coconut.

I don't give her veggies often she does like them cooked and blended, but only tiny bit and when she has her fill she acts like it's poison and won't eat it. Fruit she likes just crushed up she only gets that every so often too.

I don't see fruits and veggies as an important part of her diet and since she refuses it mostly she seems to agree..

I also feed her pork, lamb, beef, chicken, turkey, quail, organs and fish.

I sometimes take a bit of her meat to cook some steak and eggs or pork quesadilla.

I've also grilled two saury fish and had it with veggies, miso soup and rice the fish's meat was pretty good, but the cooked organs no thanks.. lol I read they're bitter, but thought I'd try it.

Saya helped by eating all the organs.

She only gets kibble and dog biscuits as treats and cooked meat, dehydrated meat/organs for training too. string cheese is her favorite treat for training too.

I'm a fan of rotational diet or adding a bit of caned food, safe human scraps for variety. I'd think eating just one kibble and nothing else must get boring for all the dog's life..

I love that picture saw it on a raw dog FB forum it's so funny. lol

We're trying to be very careful with Ponta and not feed him scraps from the table. Sachi, who predicted before we got a Shiba that I would be the one sneaking him food, is the one who always breaks down. She usually just gives him rice from the table, though. When I pointed out that her prediction about who would feed him from the table once, she cleverly replied, "But it's *your* leftover rice!"

Sachi will always supplement his dog food with mixes of rice, carrots, pasta, tofu, potato, pumpkin, cabbage, beans, radish greens & peels, broccoli stems, sesame seeds, and when he's lucky, chicken or other meats, usually with an amount of soy milk. Much of it is scraps from our own cooking. For example, we got a spiral cut ham from costco in Kawasaki last week and there were a lot of scraps left over from my disassembly. Sachi is boiling that and then including it in his meals over the next week or two.

Sometimes we'll visit a doggy cafe near a dog run and Ponta will get one of their special treats.

Human food, yes. Table food, no. I have made it a point to make sure our dog does not get the food we eat. He does get some of it raw and unseasoned. As treats we give a variety of fruits and vegetables and will feed raw chicken or fish as part of a meal. He get never gets anything we cook except for rice and or a steamed vegetable.

Koni gets the following any time we eat them:
-1 piece of breakfast cereal when DH is pouring his bowl in the morning
-1 nerd when DH opens a package (we had a ton after halloween). Anytime DH opened a box, Koni would sit and wait for his nerd and then run off to eat it.
-a piece of any kind of fruit or berry that I'm getting for a snack, other than grapes (don't want him to get a taste for them just in case)
-to lick out finished yogurt cups - too hilarious to resist because he gets 'em up on his nose and then walks around like that, still licking the inside.

Koni gets these "human" foods as treats even though we aren't eating them:
    -peanut butter
-hot dog pieces are his emergency recall food
    -carrots (clean those teeth!)

We veeeeeery occasionally break the rules and feed him food from our meal plates, usually because we are at someone's house and he is doing something suspicious sounding out of view. If we do, it's only a piece of veggie or a carb (bread/pasta) and never cooked meat as we have previously had enough digestive disaster from that to be shy of feeding even the tiniest piece.

@Koni B. Koni likes nerds too eh?! lol Kenshin loved tossing them around, same thing with the yogurt cups. I think Kenshin has an iron gut or something, I split my breakfast cereal, milk and all with him in the morning.

We feed Maya raw, so she's eating human grade food as her usual meals and we give her kibbles as snacks instead. It's funny how she adores the kibbles now but refused to eat them before.

If I cook, I'll give her a bit of whatever raw ingredient I'm cooking, like a small piece of meat, a vegetable leaf, a slice of tofu, etc, as long as it's not something poisonous. As for table scraps, I used to be really strict, but the bf couldn't resist. We argued about it for a while, but I gave in after seeing how happy they both are. It's usually bits of fruit, crabs (rice, bread, noodles), or meat. We do make sure not to give her anything that's salty or greasy and would soak the food in water for a while to remove any seasoning if necessary.

Oh gosh, my parents spoil Apollo so bad. They recently started feeding him some scraps of slightly stale bread. He loves the taste and the crunchiness, so they feed him a little bit in the mornings as part of his breakfast. Just yesterday we finally had a family dinner this week, so he sat next to the dining room table, looking up with those puppy eyes, and my parents just couldn't resist feeding him some steamed carrots and broccoli we were having LOL.

Apollo didn't used to be a "begging for food" puppy, but rest assured, he is one now! My family is pretty open about feeding him scraps. Of course the scraps have minimal seasoning and are just cooked simply or steamed. Though we plan on mixing his kibble with real food in the future since he seems to like it so much and we do feel a little better about it health-wise. I've always been more a fan of feeding my pets "people" food over kibble.

Apollo also loves cheese and bananas, not necessarily together (:

I loved the list of things Koni gets, esp. the one nerd!

My husband who is German, eats muesli for breakfast every morning. Every morning he puts too much in his bowl, and has leftover milk and muesli. Which he hetn gives to the dogs. Since we get up at different times, for the longest time I didn't know this was going on. But I wondered why Toby's weight had gotten rather out of control, regardless of how much I cut back his dinner.

Then I discovered the muesli. So I made him stop (I thought) and yes, it helped with Toby's weight loss plan, and he looks much more svelte now.

But Bel is quite fat and she's never been an overeater. Guess who has been getting the leftover muesli for the past couple of months? And it's not a tiny amount, btw--one day I saw him do it, and it was like 1/4 cup, maybe even 1/2 a cup!

We'll be having a talk (again) about portion control (for my husband) and why the dogs don't need milk and muesli every morning.

I also feed my dog with scraps of meat sometimes but only meat. I don't give other scraps because I'm afraid my dog might get sick.

  • I was strong enough not to give Selene any scraps from the dinner table. This means that while she likes to sit by us and stare at us eating dinner, she never expects anything. So she doesn't get sad when she doesn't get anything.

She is on the BARF diet but has half a carrot each day as a treat. Also, she has dried meat treats (mostly venison) and I smear Vegemite on the inside of her Kong

We had a big problem of guests (one being a very good friend of mine who comes around our house ALOT) feeding our dog Baloo scraps. Or entire sweetbuns.

It never ended well for our boy. Needless to say, any scraps my 'future' dog will get are going in his/her dish first.

@newzealandpower How did you get your dog to eat vegemite? I would have never even considered a dog wanting to try it.
  • We use certain foods as treats and in very small quantities: sharp chedder cheese (Koji doesn't seem to care for string cheese), hotdog pieces, small slices of meat like pastrami and corned beef, tuna....these types of treats are the only ones he likes to eat. I've gotten him conventional dog treats and he just sniffs at them and walks away. What a brat!

We don't give him any treats while we are eating ourselves since we don't want to encourage begging. So far begging has been a non issue since Koji isn't that food motivated anyway but we don't want the bad habit to eventually develop.

Dexter always comes running when he hears me open a yogurt because he gets to lick the lid (there's never a lot on there anyways). It's not very often that I eat one at home, so it's a special little treat for him.
