I love both of my shiba to death but there were times...I hope to dig a hole on the ground and just hide there...
Last saturday at saku's agility class, the instructor made a half full course and invited everyone to try with thie dogs off-leash. I was hesitated but also curious to see how Saku would react off-leash. There were four other dogs, three were sheperds and very obedient to their human, like soldiers trained in the army and then there is Saku. When its our turn, I took a deep breath and even said a little prayer, Mr. Saku acted as cool and cocky as usual, stood in front of a jump and waiting for my cue. As soon as I released the leash, he was running at 100 miles an hour, only in the direction AWAY from me! He had a biggest smile on his face, doing shiba 500 and zoomies around the couse for like 4 times (tunnels, a frame, contact board. etc). I was hopelessly standing there with a treat in my hand while everyone is laughing. Hubby was the loudest among all the observers. It must have been a painful sight. After I finally got hold of saku, everyone was giving me this sorry smile and told me how they would understand..."its not ur fault its because Saku is a shiba...." Really? Sighh...I wish I could prove them wrong one day that shiba can do agility too!
This reminds me of that border collie or some type of dog forgot the breed the video was posted on NK side the dog ran around having fun reminds me how Saki sounded. lol
Oh Honey that is nothing!! Lol, my first akc agility show I participated in with my Saru, he did his zoomies in front of the judge and would not listen to me at all. I had to walk out of the ring before he realized what was going on. Needless to say that day ended in tears for me and in laughter for everyone else that knew me and Saru. I laugh about it now but it was hard the first time. Keep practicing off leash if you can and he will realize that it's more fun to listen to you then to do zoomies. Good luck!
Ponta does stuff which I am sure is not unusual at all but is still embarrassing, like when I came across a cluster of dog people while taking him for a walk and joined in, Ponta immediately sat down and started licking himself with quite a bit of vigor. Or when we go to the dog run, Ponta may fixate on a certain dog and start humping like mad--but won't even do it properly, instead humping the dog's shoulder or something, his hips pumping away like he doesn't care.
Haha, yeah, all the time. Like when Conker went into a digging frenzy at the dog park, spun around, grabbed his tail, spun some more then took off straight into the chainlink fence. Or when he does not-so-funny things like go BAROOOOROOROOROOOO! At kids on a hiking trail XP
We went to some friends' party and left Maya in their backyard while we stepped indoors to get a quick meal. Ten minutes later, we came back to a super big hole and dirt all over their deck. The friends didn't mind it, but we felt really really bad.
I brought Hammond to work to show him off the day after I got him. He was 9 weeks old at the time and did really well meeting lots and lots of people.
Until we got upstairs in the executive director's office, when Hammond went to town humping his stuffed lion. The ED thought it was funny and "oh, he's just a puppy, he doesn't even know what he's doing" but I was very "seriously, dog? Of all the places we've been today you decide to do that in front of the head of the company? -_-"
My boy is a glove thief! I try to tell everyone I can at the dog park, but it's hard to always get there in time. In fact, it seems like when I start to mention that someone needs to watch their gloves, hat, scarf, etc. that he's already got a hold of the article. He's stolen four pairs of gloves from four different people at the park in less than two months. Luckily only one was destroyed when a few other dogs came up and started playing tug o' war with one lady's glove. I try to lure him off with tennis balls, treats, or even my gloves to no avail. This of course turns into a chase game. I expect this may be what he really wants out of the stealing behavior, so I shouldn't cave into his request; but when it's not your glove and you don't get it back, you look like a real jerk. He also stole a baby's mitten which was clipped to it's coat from inside the stroller! Luckily he was on a leash in that instance. I know he's adorable and looks like he wants to be loved, but he is a devious and nefarious kleptomaniac who can not be trusted when it comes to people's knitted apparel. Embarrassing indeed.
Sakura destroyed a friend's $50 scarf and then peed right in front of her. I could have strangled her, but then she got up on the couch and flopped across my lap.
@Xabi- INU likes to take wallets out of pocketbooks. I have to be vigilant when walking past women carrying their bags low. So far, his only success has been with my wife's bag. But I can only imagine what would happen if it happened to a stranger.
@Anna, LOL hilarious! @Inu, wow....maybe Inu is trying to get you more money to buy treats!
Only time Bootz ever embarrassed me was when i left her in the car for a minute to grab something from the bank. Came back out, she was laying on top of the dashboard. People stopped and stared while i was trying to get Bootz off.
Let's see....there was the time Toby escaped from the car and ran into Whole Foods and I couldn't catch him for the longest time (caught him when he stopped to graze in the bulk foods). The time he leaped on a friend's face and then hung from his beard. Or the way I can take Toby out somewhere, and he's calm as can be, and acts like a perfect gentlemen, until he sees another dog, then he turns into snarling cave troll dog. Also, once my friend was over, knitting, and he grabbed her yarn and ran off with it, effectively unravelling her work. Oops!
There was the time I took Bel to a lunch party and she walked in the door, walked over to where the food was, and pooped right in front of the table. Or when she pooped on the vet's table (twice). Kind of sad with her--she did it because she was so scared. And anytime anyone comes over, Bel barks at them like crazy. Usually she starts out being ok with them, then after 1/2 hour or so, she decides they are scary, and starts her barking.
My Akita has embarrassed me less, but one of the most embarrassing things with him is he is a bit suspicious of people he doesn't know, and decided one of my good friends is particularly suspect, so he barks at him all the time when he comes over, and even tries to stand in between us.
and I totally forgot another experience with Toby: the time he trapped a squirrel in the engine compartment of my friend's new Subaru, and managed to get my usually well behaved GSD involved in getting the squirrel out. That little adventure cost $4000 to fix, after the damage the dogs did to her car. And 6 years later, Toby is STILL obsessed with her car, even though she has had a new one for a couple of years!
Oh, I am all too familiar with the Shiba 500 occurring during agility class. Elwood is the only dog in our class that has to wear a short leash tab during "off leash" sessions just in case he decides to get the zoomies.
We've been in class since April & he's just now becoming somewhat reliable. He will *usually* at least follow me around the ring now, and when he does run off, I can typically get him to come back within 10-15 seconds. Two things that worked for us were buying a rabbit fur tug (like this one http://www.etsy.com/listing/84356028/mediumlarge-dog-toy-fleece-braided-tug) that Elwood only gets to play with at agility class & using super yummy treats (steak, organic hot dogs) when he pays attention for two or more obstacles in a row.
I almost pulled him out of class a few months ago because I was worried we were holding the other dogs back. But I know he can do it & he's made great strides since then, so we're going to persevere. I don't know that he'll ever be ready for competition, but I want to at least show my classmates that a Shiba can get through a course at a fun match!
