As I am doing my research into GPS tracking systems for dogs I came across geocaching.com and transmmiter hunting. Are any forum members involved in this hobby. I think it would be a good idea if multiple people could be involved in the search as there is a large worldwide community of geocachers.

I am a geocacher, but I have not heard of transmitter hunting.
The thing with geocaches is that they have pre-set GPS coordinates, and they do not move around. Most hand held GPS units used for geocaching are not totally accurate and you could be 10m away from the actual location of the cache. I do not think it would work with a live animal.
