Feeding a puppy

Just received a 8.5 weeks old Shiba puppy, and we have a question about how much dog food they should be given per day. According to the dog food manufacturer, the package states 1-1.5 cup per day. Should we just leave the dog food outside and have her eat it when she's hungry or should be distribute it accordingly based on breakfast, lunch, and dinner portion size.

    Thanks!

meal times are the best way to go. Not only does it help you monitor how much they eat, but it'll give you an idea of what time of day they are most hungry. Also, the fact that the food isn't always there makes the pup more hungry when you offer it.

Didn't your breeder go over this with you?

By outside, do you mean leave the bowl filled, along with the puppy, outside?

A puppy at that age should be eating 3-4 times a day a mix of wet and dry kibble, and there should pretty much be some kibbles down all the time, and water especially.

Can you explain the situation a little more clearly. I don't want to presume anything without more facts.

@ Lindsayt - her bowl is adjacent to her crate in the living room, and we did mix them with wet and dry kibbles.

    Thanks everyone for your feedback!
  • we feed Tiger Lily at set times during the day so we can track her appetite, and make it easier to time going outside. she's had very few accidents (and no pooping ones at all) in the house. timing when the puppy eats helps with the house training, and having the puppy learn to depend on you for food also helps establish who is alpha in the house

Since Priya is on the Prey Model Raw diet I feed her based on weight. she is at 8.5 weeks as well and she weighs 5 lbs. I was told either go with 3% target adult weight ( I'm thinking 20 lbs ) or 10% of current weight. Either way its either .5 lbs or .6 lbs.

With other dogs I had on kibble diet I measured the recommended daily portion and spread them about between 3 different meals.

Tochi is 13 weeks old and currently eating 3 times a day. When do you typically switch to two? Do you wait until he doesn't want 'lunch' anymore?

He still seems to have a very voracious appetite :)

Saya has never wanted lunch as a puppy she only would eat breakfast and dinner.. Probably because I did a lot of training with her between she was too full for lunch. hehe

luckily her treats was a mix of kibble, dog jerky treats from wellness, zukes salmon treats, biscuits and sometimes string cheese so her treats were good.. Sometimes she got dehydrated liver or cooked meat for training.

I guess around 5months or 6months maybe longer? Depends on the dog I dunno forgot when we switched Bella she had more of a appetite.

Zach is alittle over three months old...we got him at 10 weeks. He eats twice a day...I put half a cup of food in his bowl (breakfast and dinner) sometimes he eats it all and sometimes he doesn't. I leave the food down for about an hour (if he hasn't eaten it all) then pick it up. Usually depending on how much he ate at his last meal will determine how much he eats at his next meal. If he has only eaten half of his breakfast..he will eat all of his dinner.
I hope I didn't make this too confusing.
