This post is just for fun. If you have a black and tan shiba inu, post some pictures of them! Although I love and adore my red shiba inu puppy, I also enjoy seeing the rare black and tan shiba inu dogs and the color patterns they have. Here are a few questions which may be interesting to ask black shiba inu owners:
1) Why b&t? 2) What color was the rest of their litter? 3) What color were their parents? 4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? 5) How has their coloring changed over time?
1) Why black? Iove the B&T coloring, but red, sesame and creams are nice colorigs too..
2) What color was the rest of their litter? Saya had four other B&T siblings
3) What color were their parents? Saya's dad is red and her mom is B&T
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? Saya gets mistaken for husky or malamute puppy or mix one time she was mistaken for a Alaskan klee klai
5) How has their coloring changed over time? Not really when she blows her coat she a a whitish buff to her hard to describe without pictures.
No pictures right now since I'm on my older brother's PC.
Saya pics are on her blog an her page on this forum.
I'm guessing you were asking about Black/Tan Shibas. If so...
1) Why black? I wasn't partial to a certain color, I just wanted a Shiba :) My husband was the one that wanted a B&T
2) What color was the rest of their litter? Renji was the only B&T out of the litter of three
3) What color were their parents? Both red, however I know Renji's grandsire is a B&T
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? I get people asking me if he is a GSD all the time. I get Husky and Akita as well
5) How has their coloring changed over time? I've only had my pup three weeks, but his muzzle is filling in with more tan/white and getting lighter every day. I'm interested to see how he looks as an adult!
1) Why black?
I love B&T patterns in dogs, and my family thought it would be cute to have the newest addition share the same color pattern as our current dog.
2) What color was the rest of their litter?
B&T, Red, and Sesame.
3) What color were their parents?
B&T.
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds?
All of the time. My pup has been called a BoxerXPomeranian, Siberian husky, GSD, Wolf-hybrid, fox, and coyote mix.
5) How has their coloring changed over time?
Originally his outer coat was made up of purely black hairs, but as he has matured they have become tri-colored, in that they grow in bands of white, brown, and black. It gives him a feral sort of look and makes him shine a lustrous yet rusty way. Its hard to explain. His facial markings have also changed, he went from small brown smudges under his eyes to more of a goggled appearance. His muzzle has also lighted considerably. Pictures however show it the best =D
I love all the pics of black and tans! Shadow is a rescue so I don't know the answer to 2,3 and 5 as I got him as an adult. As for 1 we picked Shadow for his other characteristics that we were looking for (as he is our second shiba of our household), but having a different coloring then our first (red) was a nice plus. Number 4; Most people that have actually heard of shibas look pretty skeptically at me because they've never heard of/seen anything but red shibas. People mistake both of them for huskies or akitas but Shadow they have also called a doberman puppy, what?!
1) Why b&t? - I loved the look of black and tans when I was initially searching for a Shiba. I had the choice of a male sesame or a female black and tan and I really wanted a female, so I went with Taj.
2) What color was the rest of their litter? -Yikes, I didn't meet the rest of the litter when I picked her up, she was 3 months old. I never received any litter pictures either (sooo bad I know, but this was 8 1/2 years ago, and it was my first dog :/ )
3) What color were their parents? -Taj's father was black and tan and her mother was red.
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? -Not really, I get a lot of people who ask what she is, I think more people have seen the reds and it's harder for them to identify a black and tan.
5) How has their coloring changed over time? -Taj's coloring has stayed pretty vibrant over time. I have noticed some lightening around her eyes and near her snout.
The first pic is at 3 years old, the second was around 5 years.
1) Why b&t? I was drawn to the expressive nature of their faces. When I began researching the breed when I was in college, I was so intrigued by the B&T's that I immediately said that if I could choose the colour of my Shiba (when I FINALLY was able to get one) that I would pick a B&T. And several years later, Bella entered my life. :)
2) What color was the rest of their litter? Hmm... This was several years ago, as Bella is almost 6 now... There were four puppies in her litter, and I think there was one other B&T female and the other two were red. I think, I could be wrong about that though.
3) What color were their parents? Mother was red, father was B&T.
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? Yep. It gets really annoying having people ask me if she is a Husky... (yep, my little 25 pound Shiba REALLY looks like a Husky...)
5) How has their coloring changed over time? Bella's face has changed quite a bit over the years.

ETA: Sorry those first few pictures are gigantic. They were hosted on photobucket, and I have no idea how to resize them there... It has been so long since I have used that one! And all the original photos are on my desktop, and I am on my laptop. :)

I actually adopted my shiba when he was 4 months, so I can't answer most of your questions =( his coloring hasn't changed at all though! (He's 1.5 years old)
OK, I finally got around to looking thru Sukoshi's puppy pictures. Here is my entry on black and tan Shibas. 1) My brother had black and tan Shibas, so I knew about them. 2) Don't know about litter mates. 3)Dam- Black and Tan; Sire-Red 4)Other breeds: When she was a puppy, folks asked me if she was a shepherd puppy, a husky puppy, or a mix of the two. Folks also thought she might be an Akita puppy. Now at the venerable age of 6 years and as the largest female Shiba anyone has seen, folks recognize her as a Shiba and then wonder if she has anything else in her. I explain the DNA testing results. To wit, she may have "old Chow" somewhere in the reconstituted Shiba mix. 5) As she's gotten older, the "mushroom" undercoat has become more pronounced. Her "black" is the rusty black mentioned in some Shiba literature.
I tried to do several puppy pictures, but the system wasn't accepting them.
Well - Paiji is not correct colored black & tan. It's rather a kind of tricolor - thought the color is called black & tan pinto in her pedigree.
1) Why b&t? Well - she was the one of her litter who adopted us. Her sister, who was also available for us, seemed sooo borring... AND of course, she had to fit to our first Shiba, Biko. Paiji's breeder knew Biko quite well and advised us that Paiji would be the better companion for Biko as her sister would try to dominate him (which we and the breeder did not want because of Biko' s history).
2) What color was the rest of their litter? It were 4 puppies: one sister was red, another sister and the brother were correct black & tan.
3) What color were their parents? Both are red, as well as all of the grand- and great-grand-parents.
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? Husky-puppy or American Akita-puppy
5) How has their coloring changed over time? Quite a lot: When she was born, she was nearly only black with just a little white spot on her neck an an the legs. Until abot 8 weeks, more and more white appeared until she was black & white. Then, the tips of her ears began to turn red. Finally, when Paiji was about one year old, her head was red, part of her legs were red and she had little red spots on the rest of her legs. Now, Paiji is 7 years old and the colour still changes over the year: when she blows her coat, she seems a little lightes black, when she has her full coat, she appears wonderfull black.
I try to post some pictures: on the first one, Paiji is about 7 weeks old, on the second (where she is standing) she is about one and a half years old, on the others (the one in the snow and the one where she is lying), she is about 6 to 7 years old:
Why is it pinto and not tri color? There are literally three colors. Then again, black and tan has black, white and red... tri-colors.
- - - - - - - - - This is a former foster, Hachi. She was given up by her breeder, and I'm fairly certain her sire/dam and other members of her litter were all black & tan. She's turning 6 this year.
I don't know why it's named pinto and not tricolored. I, as well as some breeders, would also think tricolored would be the better word. But the club (DCNH - german club for nordic dogs as well as the VDH) called it pinto on the pedigree...
I think its because black and tans are actually tri colored. All B&T are red, white, and black. I think they are even referred as being tricolored in their description. Pintos on the other hand, while being all three colors, the amount of white, and red is more pronounced then usual, as well as their markings being mis-marked. I think the Pinto isn't only talking about the color but also has to deal with the markings. I know pinto dogs tend to have the same marking patterns, in other breeds, as your girl.
This is all I can add: I vaguely recall reading in a fairly technical article that Shiba "black and tans," aside from being the standard descriptor, are called B&T and not "tricolor" because there's actually a genetic difference between what causes Shiba B&T patterning and other tricolor canines.... like Basenjis. And "pinto" is reserved to talk about specific genes that result in a specific type of pattern, too.
when i hear 'pinto' i think of the horses... and how great danes seem get those types of markings, but even then its not called pinto. What's it called in Basenjis? I dunno. Breed standards and color genetics don't seem to translate in my head.
1) Why b&t?
Jack was the last one in the litter at the rescue and we fell in love with him.
2) What color was the rest of their litter?
red or red sesame
3) What color were their parents?
not sure - his litter was a puppy mill rescue.
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds?
people make up all sorts of breeds - miniature husky, mini wolf-dog, mini- B&T fox - then they mispronounce Shiba and ask repeatedly when we encounter them again. :) it's all good though. Surprisingly, I get stopped a lot by people who know the breed - walking people and people in cars.
5) How has their coloring changed over time?
his 'bow-tie' is coming in on his chest but we adopted him at 3 months so he is pretty much the same coloring he was when we got him.
Hi everyone, Finally getting around to posting some pics
1) Why b&t? I didn't really have a choice. Didn't really have a preference tho'
2) What color was the rest of their litter? Didn't buy her from a breeder but was told she was an only child
3) What color were their parents? Unknown
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? All the time. Husky, GSD, miniature Akita, and the most comment re: breed is What kind of dog is that???
5) How has their coloring changed over time? Not much, just became more defined.
Here are some pics, one at 10 weeks, then 10 months, then 12 months.
Can't seem to post multiple photos, so I'll do multiple posts.
1) Why b&t? i wanted to name my dog kuma (bear) so the b&t fits the name
2) What color was the rest of their litter? he was the only one of his litter.
3) What color were their parents? Both his parents were tan so i don't know where the black came from..maybe his mom cheated on his dad? lol he's also half-miniature.
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds? Nope! looks all shiba to me :)
5) How has their coloring changed over time? the parts that are tan are getting darker..and some of him is turning sesame?
1) Why b&t?
That is what they had at the rescue shelter and we fell in love with them in first sight(:
2) What color was the rest of their litter?
Not exactly sure… would love to know though!
3) What color were their parents?
I suppose they were black and tan as well….
4) Do people mistake your dog for other breeds?
They mistake Indy for a German Shepard in pictures!
5) How has their coloring changed over time?
It doesn’t….just after Sage blows coat her undercoat turns whiter.
Oh, and Indy’s “beard has turned white… but he is just an old boy!
