Dry Heaving for attention?

    My Kiyoko seems to have picked up the habit of dry heaving. I say habit because she seems to do it for attention. She doesn't cough anything up, she's not ill, she runs the "Shiba 500" several times a day, she's eating fine and drinking lots of water; I just can't figure it out. I don't know if it's a hair ball situation; I guess it could be, she's shedding like crazy. I hate to hear it because it sounds so horrible. I was going to take her to the vet, but when I resolve to do it, she stops. Anyone else have any experience with this?

    Sorry all; I'm still new to the forum. I should have searched this topic before posting. I'm pretty sure it might be allergies. She is also scratching quite a bit as well. I'm going to take her to the vet.

    Ok. My vet is around the corner. I called after I posted and was able to get Kiyoko in with the vet. He said her heart sounds great, as well as her lungs. He gave her an antihistamine in case it is an allergy, based on the scratching and dry heaving. He also gave her an antibiotic in case she's developing an infection and a cough suppressant to ge given only if she coughs. I doubt I will be using that because she's not really coughing. I feel SO much better after taking her to the vet.

    @Tacye

    I think what you are describing could be reverse sneezing. Usually harmless and non life-threatening but sounds really scary the first times you hear it. It usually happens with my dogs if they're too excited or after playing. Goes away after a bit or after I rub their throats a little. If it's allergies that could be causing it, I have heard that a little Benedryl can help if it's very often.

    Thanks for the videos! What Kiyoko is doing is similar, but it's more of an actual gagging/coughing; like she's trying to hack something up.

    My maltese had something similar like he had something caught in his throat. Vet checked his nose and throat but said it was most likely allergies. After some meds, it went away. Hope that's what it is and Kiyoko feels better soon!

    Thanks! She's on day four of meds and she hasn't made the noise, nor is she scratching as much. I guess the mystery is solved.
