This is something I posted on my fb: things learned at 3:39am...#1 Lock your door or a strange drunk man might walk in looking for "Jesse & his old lady", #2 Walton County 911 & Sheriff's department can work very fast, #3 my dog that doesn't bark can be very loud and menacing, #4 being polite can get someone to do what you what them to do (like walk outside to look "Jesse & the old lady"...all's well that ends well in this case...

Jazz woke me up, not the guy in the house. She was going nuts - he was in the hallway and obviously could not see her. She could not see him either. She was growling and barking and screaming. I picked her up and went into the hallway where the very confused drunk guy was and she kept growling and it was her growl of dismemberment that is so loud. I really think that was the reason the guy walked out of the house.LJ - Jazz ( Female Shiba), Atlanta, GA Jazz's Blog

That's why I like to keep Akira in my room at night so that he can wake me up if there's something.

I'm glad Jazz scared that man out and that you're both ok.I love my Akira (shiba inu)

Jazz is such a lover and cuddler - I honestly didn't think she'd respond that way. She loves humans, but I'm thinking it was the very distinctive smell of drunkenness that really set her off.LJ - Jazz ( Female Shiba), Atlanta, GA Jazz's Blog

I think Katsu would let us know by barking, Nuki would probably start whining because he wanted the drunk guy to pet him. I'd probably just tell my father to call before he came over, lol. Glad everything worked out in the end though, that's pretty scary.Joe & Dawn ruled by our shibas *Katsu* and *Tanuki*. Check out Katsu's Blog, It's a Porkchop Life

Scary situation, glad everything turned out okay. My dog doesnt really react well to strangers unless our family is welcoming too. I've seen her get mad at pizza deliver or mailman but calms down after we greet them. I dont really know if she would protect me or my family for sure but I hope it never comes to that."You may delay, but time will not."

Wow that is crazy....im glad you are ok. Yoshi would kill someone to protect me. He hates strangers, unless they have a dog lol. He is also very protective of me, so if someone came into my house in the middle of night I am pretty sure that they would be dead.....immediately.Amanda, Chris, Yoshi and soon to be Emi

Spike always seems to want to play with strangers, HOWEVER...If we are on a walk and I get that "I may be about to get mugged" vibe from someone walking by, he totally picks up on it and will growl/bark/lunge at the guy. Even though I pull him back on his leash, it's kind of nice to know he's got my back. And the cool thing is, when we walk by non-threatening a minute later, he's back to his happy self.Willing thrall of Spike!, the dog-pire.

Koji will bark incessantly at anyone outside of immediate family members, who enters the house. It usually takes several minutes for me to calm him down. But it seems totally fear driven. When I finally calm him down, he is shaking like a leaf. If I was in real danger, I wonder if he would override his fear and go on the attack. There was only only time I saw that attack instinct come out, and that was after a dog off his leash started getting all over Koji when we were out on a walk. After a several warning barks that said 'back off', he let out that "growl of dismemberment" -- like back off right now or you are dead meat.

It's pretty odd - I wasn't scared or tempted to go looking for my gun. If I'd gotten a different vibe from the guy, it would have been different. He was simply very drunk and very confused. Where I used to live, we never locked the back door, ever. I am still adjusting to that. My youngest brother and gun aficionado was very upset that I didn't have my gun in reach. We have 2 guns in my house - my middle brother's pistol and my M1 Carbine. Both guns are kept unloaded with bullets/shells in a separate place. The fact that this guy was in the house and 6 ft from my bedroom is why I didn't even think of getting my gun.

The weird thing is that for the last several naps that I am around Jazz, she's been growling in her sleep and then a few moments later wagging her tail. I guess she's reliving her moment of heroism!LJ - Jazz ( Female Shiba), Atlanta, GA Jazz's Blog

I'm glad Jazz was there to protect you :)

I don't know if Pong Pong would protect me but she's definitely an alarm dog. She'll let us know if there's a cat, a person, another dog, loose hamsters, plant eating opossums, or even slight change in the wind.

She is also a really good guard dog for the house. While I was still living with other people, we all went out for a school event. A group of other friends (that she doesn't know) arrived home first so she went into full guard dog with the barking and the teeth bearing. But she didn't attack them and just kept a distance. I am sure if there was someone breaking into the house, they would be scared.

Protection wise, Pong Pong is all bark no bite. She's more likely to run away if someone actually approach her....Jenny (human) and Pong Pong (shiba inu)

Moto (my shiba who passed a couple years ago) probably would have at least let out a formidable growl.

Miko (my shikoku) will at least bark, but then would likely lick an intruder to death.

Ruby (my pit bull) will growl at dark silhouettes but once a human approaches she is all wiggles and kisses. So it is my job to do all the growling and protecting in my house.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. I saw this on your FB last night! LJ I am so glad it was just a drunk guy and not someone breaking into your house.

I don't have a Shiba, buy my Kai would growl, bark, talk, yell and might even bite a man who came into my house uninvited. A woman, maybe not. But he can smell men when they are walking up the front before they knock and he gets worked up. I always know when a guy is approaching. He puts on quite the show.Tara surviving in the burbs with Koda & Maymay (Kai Ken)

Sage (kai mix) would detect anyone with a malicious thought at 200 yards away, put on his distance increasing display. I think he'd protect outdoors, but in the house, he;d hide.
Reilly (GSD/greyhound mix) is dead serious about the house, though. Her bark is impressive, and I dont think she is to be trifled with. Her teeth are old and round, but I dont think anyone would stick around to find that out.

aside: LJ- wow! M1 carbine is my favorite! jealous! :)Chrystal, with Reilly and Sage - Yipes Stripes!

Chrys - the M1 Carbine was my grandfather's from WWII - it's actually a Saginaw M1 Carbine - Granddad was a Marine in WWII. It is probably one of my most prized possessions.LJ - Jazz ( Female Shiba), Atlanta, GA Jazz's Blog

That's so cool that you have your grandpa's own M1. I tried that rifle at a sampler day at the range and I liked the feel a lot, and shot good groups with it (for a neophyte). I saved my target and wrote M1 carbine on it so I'd remember what it was. Nice wood stock and the little magazine was cute and unassuming...someday I'll look for one for myself.Chrystal, with Reilly and Sage - Yipes Stripes!

Yeah, it's one of the very few things that I have of my grandfather's. The stock is carved, like many of the WWII guns that I have seen. I have 4 clips for the M1 and I'm a decent shot - personally, I prefer the Winchester Model 70 that my dad hunted with, but that now belongs to my youngest brother. I prefer handguns over rifles as I don't hunt anymore and am not shooting while astride a horse (how I learned to shoot rifles) - can't take a decent shot from the ground unless I'm shooting from the hip (which is not recommended with bolt-action rifles). My preferred handgun in a Glock 9 mil - fave is the 19, but the 26 is pretty nice, too.LJ - Jazz ( Female Shiba), Atlanta, GA Jazz's Blog

well, MoJo doesn't seem like much of a watchdog. He wags his tail at everyone and hardly ever barks unless his ball went under something he can't reach. And that's not even a BARK..it's more a arroooo, rooo sound, hahah. I don't know how he would react if he sensed FEAR in me. Maybe he would respond in a way I've never seen. When we go for walks and strangers approach, he's too happy to go up to them and get pet and made a fuss over. But, if that stranger posed a threat, MoJo could possibly respond angrily. Who knows??

I don't know if the guy was a bad guy or not, but he was very alert in the situation....he is always on high alert when my fiance isn't home. I never thought that T would protect us, but actually 2 nights ago at 3 in the morning, Triton suddenly jumped off the bed and RAN into the living room, barking and snarling and growling the whole time. Eric and I got up and checked the house but nothing was amiss. It's nice to know that T is brave though.

Ki, though not a pure shiba, is definitely wary of strangers and strange behavior. There have been a couple occassions he's seriously warned someone away. Most recently was outside a bagel shop. We were sitting at a table outside when a not-quite-all-there homeless man approached. He was moving very erratically (think classic zombie movies) and his speech wasn't clear. He took a stumbling step toward me and Ki was up in a flash in big-scary-dog stance with growly warning bark turned to 11. The guy moved back quite a ways and actually took a seat to recover. He was really surprised but he apologized (to the dog...yeah he was a bit off) and moved on.

Generally when strange people enter the house Ki will calm down when you make it clear they are allowed to be there but if he doesn't know them he will stay where he can see them and generally stay between me and the 'stranger'. Friends are okay though even if he hasn't met them before. I think our body language and actions make it clear that someone is a 'friend' versus a 'stranger' (like a repair man).My friend and e-friends call me Rainy and my dog is Kitsune the ginormous shibamutt. I walked in the house 2 days ago at night, and Kenji must have been in a deep sleep on the couch. Well the second he heard the door he ran over to the gate and let out a very menacing bark and growl. It was the first time he ever did that, and both me and my mom were very surprised by it. Even if he didn't protect us in the sense that he would attack an intruder, he definitely would give us warning, which i could hope for from such a small dog.

Wow...you all are lucky! When the doorbell rings, if we are upstairs, he looks out the window, does this huff-bark thing, then runs and hides under the bed! If I'm downstairs, he will stand at the top of the stairs and bark...won't come down, but sit up there like he's this big dog. Barely weighs 22 pounds but wants to be loud! Maybe when he gets older he will get some nerves and protect me. Right now, he's scared of people!
