Happy Belated Birthday Yoshi! We're awful Shiba parents as we haven't posted in a long, long time. We're still here though! For our birthdays (humans and shiba) we took a trip out to the coast in May - Yoshi of course had a blast. Its hard to imagine that in October he'll be a year and a half.

It's strange, right around the one year mark he became more mellow, now likes to hang out with his people and loves to follow us around everywhere. He's still dog reactive which we're still working on. It's getting better, but not yet 100%. We went to a reactive dog class which has helped. Of course he was the only dog that lunged and barked at all the other dogs. He also wouldn't take any treats for five weeks. On the very last day of class he finally started to show signs of progress. Yes!

Its weird to imagine that a year ago we were questioning whether or not we were really ready for this. Now it's hard to imagine life without the little guy. Wouldn't trade it for anything. And now for the spam...

Yoshi is adorable! Good luck with the training...I know it can be frustrating until you see real progress. My friend and e-friends call me Rainy and my dog is Kitsune the ginormous shibamutt. Typing with Paws

Yes, Yoshi sure loves the beach. I think his favorite things about the beach are jumping on logs, chasing birds, and digging to his heart's content. He's a silly boy.

Ha! The purple harness...that's a funny story. The poor guy is built so oddly that we had a difficult time finding a harness that fit him. We've since switched to a different harness that is more comfortable for him. He approves of the color, black, which he says is more "manly".

My only question is, how do you prevent fur breakage? His current harness is flece lined, but he has stripes on his shoulder area. Same goes for his collar. We recently switched to a Spindrift collar which is rolled nylon.

As for training...it went better last week. Not as much screaming and less death stares from the other doggy parents. We still in the ex pen, but that's okay. Our trainer is super patient and nice, so we love her. We've also made the decision to stop going to the dog park dog now. We realized through conversation with the trainer that most of his negative or fearful/agressive behavior was picked up at the dog park. His behavior has really changed for the better since we started training and he seems to really enjoy it. We found the magic treat that he will do anything for ...string cheese.

We'll keep you all posted on how things go.

It's interesting what you say about most of his negative or fearful/aggressive behavior was picked up at the dog park. I always wondered if dogs would pick up bad habits or not. I've never been a fan about doggie parks and always debate whether or not I should go with MoJo. He's very socialized...great with adults, children and other dogs, but I always worry if he would change after going there. So many people have such a great time and it's so good for their dogs to interact with others, but yet I hesitate. Gotta see how I feel once Springtime arrives.

Dogs totally pick up bad habits. Miko has recently taught Ruby to hump (thanks a lot Miko...), she only humps Miko but all the same...

But yeah while that is a silly habit, dogs teach each other how to interact. So if dogs are surrounded by poorly mannered dogs, they are going to learn bad manners. Just like little kids. If they play with rude children, who curse a lot and sniff glue, you end up with a child sniffing glue, and cursing like a sailor.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”-Milan Kundera

    Nooooooo!!!!!

I thought my Moshi was the cutest Shiba alive! He has some serious competition...

I heard from my vet that humping is a show of dominance in most instances, and nothing sexual. Before MoJo was neutered, he humped his teddy bear all the time. We'd take it away until bed time. Then he'd just sleep with it. As he got almost a year old, he chewed his face off. I sewed the teddy bear up a couple times, but MoJo would just rechew the area. Finally I threw it out. Then after a few weeks I gave him another stuffed animal to sleep with. He started humping that too...and chewing. I said "the heck with this"!
I didn't like seeing the humping, nor did I like to sew up the stuffed toys. Now no stuffed animals, and NO HUMPING!

We have a "Yoshi" too -- and they look very similar! If you don't mind, how much does your Yoshi weigh (with double coat (wintertime), and without double coat (summertime))? Our Yoshi looks thinner in the face than yours, but otherwise they look about the same size.

Yoshi says thanks for the birthdays wishes.

@Yoshi2009 - We didn't really get a true summer here in Oregon so Yoshi just recently started blowing his coat. At his last weigh in he was 25.5 pounds. He been right around 24 - 26 pounds since the spring. This will be his first winter as an adult dog so...bring on the fluff! If the summer has been any indicator it will be a long cold winter.

@Saya - Lol a statue. He was tired after the long hike and decided to sit. What you can't see in the photo is that his whole underside was covered in mud.

@nicelo - We're in Oregon. And I agree...the scenery is awesome. We've lived in lots of different states and Oregon is our favorite.David + Wendy, Yoshi (Shiba), and Fatty (one very large cat) - living in Oregon
