A week ago from Saturday I picked up my red Shiba puppy. She's 9wks right now and will be 10wks on Tuesday. I love her so much. She's so much fun to be with. I've been taking her to school and she just sleeps through the whole lectures and labs, and than during our break, she plays with some of my classmates animals. I'm hoping I'll be able to show her. I'll start her in obedience class next month though. Sorry, I would love to post some pictures of her, but for some reason I can't. I have some pictures of her on flickr.
Basically with Flickr, you click on the "share this" bottom near the upper right corner and copy the text in "embed it".

Can't wait to see pics of your pup:)My name is Beth, Personal slave of Tetsu(shiba inu) Tikaani(siberian husky) and Safyre(cat), and ruler of Tom(Boyfriend). Living in scenic Suffolk County, Long Island
Welcome to the forum Kiyo sounds like a nice shiba pup to have and you can take her to school lucky! I bet meeting all those students and friends are great socialization for her. =)Nicole, Bella(Boxer), and Saya(Shiba inu)
Yeah, one of the reasons why I wanted to go to school to be a Vet Tech. A lot of fun bringing your animals to school to keep you calm(that if they're calm too, lol than it's kind of crazy). It's a great way for her to socialize than just going to puppy school, and hopefully she'll become more comfortable going to a vet's office.
Too cute!!My name is Beth, Personal slave of Tetsu(shiba inu) Tikaani(siberian husky) and Safyre(cat), and ruler of Tom(Boyfriend). Living in scenic Suffolk County, Long Island
Aww! she's so cute I love her pikachu toy and that fox toy looks so cute I love buying Saya plush fox toys to play with. =)Nicole, Bella(Boxer), and Saya(Shiba inu)
thanks everyone. I'll keep you guys posted on how she's doing. Today she had to go to the vet to get her vaccine and checking up after taking her prescribed medication. Last week I sent a fecal sample in and they found coccidia in the sample :( but she's fine now. Still have to take another test though but not for another week. Hopefully she's clean this time.
aw, she's adorable. that's so awesome that you get to bring your pet to class, lol. and utterly irrelevant, but i had that exact same chest of draws years back. xD;
Kiyo is now 15wks old now. She's grown alot. We had one slip up on her training on the leash. A skateboarder came by her and Kiyo just flipped out. Now I have my cousin skateboard to get her comfortable around them. She doing pretty good around it now. My pit/mix Reese loves having her around so he has someone to play with. Indy, my shiba/mix, on the other had still doesn't like her that much but is use to her presence. Her some new pics of her.
She is so cute. I love the picture of Reese pouting looking out the window. They remind me of my old dogs Piglet and Moto and how they used to play. Too cute.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. She is adorable! Glad she and Reese get along so well. :) And I am sure Indy will come around very soon. She is too cute to be upset with for long. hehe.Casey with Bella (shiba) and Nola (shiba) hanging out in the mountains of Virginia.
Well Kiyo is now 18wks old and is growing fast. Sorry, I don't have any new pictures of her. Hoping to take some tomorrow. Anyways Kiyo started her puppy class yesterday night. She did really well with some commands that I already taught her and she walks really good on the leash too. I was so proud of her. But she was a little shy and I guess she was picking that up from me. Most of the puppies in her class are huge compared to her. Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Pyrenees, Airedale Terrier, Tibetan Mastiff, German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, and 2 Labrador Retrievers(these two are Kiyo size right now). So she kind of freaked out and didn't want to do anything with them, so I didn't push her. Maybe next week she will be more willing to meet the other puppies. Here at home, Kiyo is starting to work with Reese and Indy as a pack. I've been taking her and Indy out for walks and it has worked wonders between them. They get along so much better! ^-^ I'm so happy and can't wait to take her out to the lake! This weekend I'll be going to see some of my family and I hoping Kiyo can meet some of their dogs and pups.
My poor Kiyo is staying over night at the clinic. For the past couple of days she's been having soft stools, but now its diarrhea or just fluid. On top of that she vomit yesterday because she ate some pieces of a blanket that she plays with Reese, and after she urinated, blood came out. At first I was thinking she was in heat but she's only 19wks old. She wouldn't drink last night, so I gave her water through a syringe every time she woke up, which was about every 2hrs. This morning she seem better. I feed her, she drank from her bowl, and she was playing, but when I came home from some garage sales with my mom, Kiyo went back to hiding and not feeling good. I call her vet, and my mom and I took her straight to the vet. He didn't know for sure what was wrong. She's too young to have bladder or kidney stones, so she might have a bladder infection, but we still not sure about the diarrhea. So he wanted her to stay for observation. Hopefully they can figure out what's wrong with her. I want my little shiba back....
I really hope she feels better and they figure out what's wrong. On another note, I am completely jealous that you can go to garage sales right now, it's one of my fave pasttimes but the 6 inches of snow in NY right now makes it impossible. :)
I talked to one of the Vet Techs around 5:30pm. She said that Kiyo is doing fine. They were able to get a urine sample and they sent it out to get tested. Won't know the results till tomorrow morning hopefully. Kiyo didn't have a bowel movement, so hopefully she did afterwards or they find out tomorrow. I'm hoping I can get her back tomorrow. I really miss her.
lepercann, yeah, garage sales are great. Friday I bought some figurines, a grey wolf pup and an tlingit art carved eagle(it's an alaskan native tribe art). My mom and I go to them once and a while. Here in San Joaquin Valley of CA, we don't get snow. Wished we did, but I guess I can move North or in a higher elevation. lol So yeah, every weekend someone is having a garage sale.
I'm sorry Kiyo isn't feeling well! Healing vibes from Evie and me, too! Evie is also in a similar situation right now, minus the vet part. Keep us posted!!!!!Hana, the human. Evie, the Shiba and owner of my heart.
Well I just got a call about 2hrs ago. The vet tech told me the results were in and they found crystals in her urine. We were all hoping for a bladder infection. So they took x-rays today and will check for any stones. She told me that Kiyo is in good spirits and is playing. I'm so happy to hear that. They're going to keep her another night though and I have to call tomorrow morning to see if she has any stones and if she can come home. I praying for no stones and that she can come home. I want my little shiba girl back....
I'm glad to hear she is in good spirits. I'm sorry they found crystals. How do they handle stones in dogs, do you know yet?Hana, the human. Evie, the Shiba and owner of my heart.
they start them on a diet that helps stop more crystals developing and get rid of the crystals. crystals become stones. Sometimes the dog can pass the stones if they are small enough but if they can't pass them and the dog is in pain, they have to surgically removed, depending if they can be remove.
KIYO IS FINALLY HOME! lol I'm very happy to have her back again. When I went in to the vet, he told me that he didn't find any stones, but he's going to have a specialist look at the radiograph just in case. So I have to call back Wednesday for those results. She'll be on c/d canned food and clavamox for almost 2 wks and than has to have her urine tested again to see if the crystals are going away. But till than I'm glad to have my little girl back and will be extra cautious with her till she is well again. The boys are happy to see her again. lol They scared her half to death when they wanted to smell her.
Glad to hear Kiyo is home and doing well. And glad that it seems to be just a UTI.
Nola had one of these last spring, and the poor thing was just miserable. Especially after I was following her around with a measuring cup trying to get a urine sample to take to the vet. She had two weeks of clavamox, as well. Luckily, it cleared right up with no additional treatment needed. I hope the same thing goes for Kiyo.Casey with Bella (shiba) and Nola (shiba) hanging out in the mountains of Virginia.
Well alot has happen in the past 3 weeks... some good and some bad. Well I got Kiyo back from the vet and I was keeping a close eye on her and making sure she had her meds for two weeks. During that time she had diarrhea after going off the c/d can food and started eating Blue. I wasn't sure if it was from the antibiotics or from the food, but other than that she was getting better. I was still able to take her to puppy class and she's doing great. Than last Saturday I took Kiyo out so she could relieve herself, by this time she finished her clavamox 3 days ago, I notice she had blood in her urine again. So I called her vet and than he prescribed her a week of clavamox. So we were pretty sure that it was a bladder infection. Later that day she started having a weird reverse sneeze. She only had two during the day. Didn't think much of it. Later at night when everyone in the house was gone except for me and the dogs, Kiyo started to have the weird reverse sneeze again but she was having one almost every 5 to 10 minutes, she had her head up, and I notice her tongue and gums were starting to turn white. So it was serious and I decided to take her the e-vet. I went with my uncle and i was trying to keep myself together since it remind me how we lost our rhodesian/mix, especially when that was the day 5yrs ago when it happened! Crazy.... Well we got her in and they did a full blood chemistry, and 2 view radiographs. They didn't find anything but when they did the physical exam before those tests they found that her neck was swollen a bit. My parents was with us than and we all looked at each other and said "Reese." LOL I guess Reese played a little to rough with her. So they gave her an injection of a steroid, benadryl, nothing a round her neck till it goes down and no playing rough for a while. She still had diarrhea, so I while I was updating her vet how she was doing, he prescribe two medications for the diarrhea. For a few days she was out of it because of the benadryl. I kind of liked it. No hyper puppy for a while, but when she got off of it yesterday, she was a spinning top! Today she's back to normal and doing well. I'll have to take some pictures of her. Haven't been able to with her being sick for a month. This Wednesday is her last puppy class session and we're sign up for the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program test. The instructor said that we will definitely pass. So that sounds hopeful. Soon I'll be finding out if I'll be able to show Kiyo or not. I hope my baby won't get sick anymore. Too much drama and I hate drama.... ^-^
boy, you and Kiyo sure are having a hard time of it! I know how scary it is when you know there is something wrong, but you can't find out exact answers right away. I hope all will be well very soon and Kiyo won't have any more health issues. Those emergency vets are SOOOO EXPENSIVE. Been down that path with my male cat!! Thankfully MoJo has been very healthy except when he eats something strange and sometimes throws up from it upsetting his stomach. When he was little, he had Giardia which caused alot of loose stool, but medicine got that in check pretty fast. Thankfully I never saw any blood. That would have scared me. Good luck with your baby !!!!!
Thank Diane. Yeah those e-vet are expensive. I'm a vet tech student and I know how much a clinic or hospital cost, and it not that much.
Next thing that happen to Kiyo, today we came home from school. Kiyo was playing around with Reese. As usual Reese threw himself on the ground for her. Well Kiyo started to clean Reese's ear and teeth. Don't ask me why, she just does that. Anyways while my mom, sis, bro, and I saw them doing that, something made Reese upset and he grabbed Kiyo in the face. We all yelled at him and he let go. Kiyo was shaken up and I went over to her to check for any injuries. I started to pick her up to move her in her play pen she flipped out by crying and growling at the two dogs, and attacked the closes one which was Indy. Poor Indy got scared and bolted. After checking her out, the damage was one puncture wound, a nice cut, two smaller cuts, a broken baby tooth and a bit of blood on the gums. It could have been a lot worse. Reese and my family needs serious help. I can't be the only one try to rehabilitating him. I really want to have Cesar to help us with him. I want to know what I'm doing wrong with him. Well tomorrow I'll take her to school and have my instructor take a look at her, but she seems fine.
Don't get me started on Cesar...(if you search the forum you will find a number of threads about how much damage he has done and how irresponsible his methods are)
The animal behavior community in general is pretty opposed to his training techniques. I will spare lengthy explanations and just give you some links in case you are curious.
My shiba Moto used to lick my pit bull Piglets mouth and ears all the time.. What is Reese's history? Has Reese had issues with other dogs?
Has Reese had any medical issues (thyroid for instance). I would definitely have Reese checked out. And I would also recommend bringing a behaviorist into your home to observe your dogs and help you understand any issues you may not understand yet.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”-Milan Kundera
Jessica have you ever read Cesar's books or watch any of his videos? I own all his books and some of his videos, and have found that a lot of trainers and behaviorists philosophies are similar to his. I don't only use Cesar's method, I also have many other books base on dog behaviors and training that I use. Cesar makes a lot of sense to me on many subjects. And what I like about him is that he doesn't use one method, he is open to any method that are use my any other trainer and behaviorist but you it works when you do exercise, disciple, and affection. From day one I've been using his method and others that I've learned with Kiyo and she is a very well behaved dog. But I'll check out those links out of curiosity. I notice some of the links are political websites that are more liberal and/or progressive.
Reese is my toughest case. He never shown aggression before when we got him(He was 4mths). My parents just didn't socialized him and to make it worse he looks up to Indy when he didn't know what to do. Indy is a shy and insecure dog. To add on the problem, when I started working on him, I was also insecure and shy. Those to bad energies just build up in him to make him insecure and the way he reacts is with aggression. It's just got worse because my family isn't on the same page with him, and we haven't done much with him because of his aggression. His thyroid is normal and he was neutered between 4 and 5 months. The only medical issues he had were that he had roundworms and tapeworms when we got him, he had a growth on his left front leg(wasn't cancerous) and he has a hyperactive GI tract. Unless he has another growth growing near or on one of his endocrine glands, I don't see any of his past health issue can cause him to be aggressive. I've asked around in my area and they said that they didn't know anyone or they couldn't do much for him. Anyway my parents don't see anything wrong with him and I can't do anything to change there view even though they've seen first hand how aggressive he can get to another dog.
Read a number of his books and stand by my opinions.
I am from the Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson school of training which is based on positive reinforcement, and never using fear, intimidation, or force. I have worked in rescue since the early 90's and have seen too many good dogs ruined by "alpha" and "pack" theory based philosophies (which sadly are still adhered to amongst some trainers despite the fact that they have been dis-proven time and time again).
Often dogs who have medical issues will be more prone to defensiveness with other dogs, and it is always wise to rule it out first prior to beginning a behavior program.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”-Milan Kundera
Well that's good that you read his book and know his point of view. It sounds like your an experience trainer too. But I would like to let you know that he does use positive reinforcement when he helps a dog. He doesn't use fear, intimidation, or force on them. I stand by my opinions and what I've learn from experience. I'm new into the field but I've had dogs all my life and worked and trained them. I learn from the dogs, and read many training and behavior books on different methods and philosophies. I love my dogs and will do anything to make them happy.
I understand that if Reese was sick or injured he would act up, but that day he was fine.
I would strongly encourage you to visit some of the links I posted.
I personally cannot comfortably endorse any trainer who uses shock collars (which he has on more than a few occasions), or drags a terrified great dane through a room (as I have witnessed him do). There will always be varying opinions on what is ideal. And you have to choose what you feel comfortable with. I personally am not comfortable with much of what he does.
Periodically using positive reinforcement is not good enough for my dogs. I have worked with too many abuse cases to be okay with the methods he teaches people.
People may disagree with me, and have every right to. However you will find that more and more behavioral professionals are taking stands against much of what he promotes.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”-Milan Kundera
On the more important topic of Reese, have you considered enrolling Reese in some obedience classes? It is a perfect way to build a dogs confidence, as well as yours. It can help to really nurture your relationship with Reese, and help Reese understand that you are there to protect him and he has no reason to worry.
It has worked wonders with many of my shelter pups. We make a point to try to get as many of our shelter dogs their CGC PRIOR to adoption. In doing so we also help to make them better family members who feel confident and secure. And we all know a more confident secure dog is far less likely to act out.
I know you are in California, if you visit this link you will find their are a ton of great behaviorists and trainers in CA who can help you at least find a great class. http://www.trulydogfriendly.com/blog/?page_id=4
I know you already know that this has to be stressful on Kiyo and Reese is clearly very stressed to be reacting in such a manner, so perhaps this can help create a more harmonious environment.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”-Milan Kundera
Reese is already 2yrs old and I have talk to some obedience trainer that should no interest in it or they said that it out of there hands. I've already work on him in obedience and he does well in it till someone comes to my house or when we're outside, so we're working on that. He's getting better in the house. It's not much stressful unless we make it. Kiyo and Reese don't hold a grudge to each other, but my mom want me to keep them separate which could cause problems if we don't do something. But I'll check that list out and see if anybody is close by.
That sucks that trainers are not being very helpful. My pit bull before Ruby, Piglet, I adopted at 10 years old after being used as a breeder bitch for dog fighters, and after a few weeks of solid obedience classes she got her CGC and went on to be a therapy dog.
Those trainers did you a blessing though, if they think that a 2 year old pit bull (the most desperate to please breed ever IMHO) is out of their hands, they clearly are not qualified to train anything. Jeez that would make me crazy.
Hopefully someone on the list can be of some use to you.
You are right that dogs don't hold grudges, but my concern would be that Kiyo is learning that that is house uncomfortable situations are resolved, and Reese is learning that acting out gets him what he wants (the puppy being taken away), neither great lessons, and it is a myth that dogs let go of trauma. Enough scary experiences and without proper addressing of the situation a dog can grow increasingly fearful and insecure, like what you described with Reese learning a lot of his behavior from your other dog.Jessica “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring - it was peace.”-Milan Kundera
I was thinking about the "dogs don't hold a grudge" thing too...Maybe not, but of course they remember scary things happening, and I think it is quite clear that they remember dogs that have hurt them. My male shiba is VERY aware that the female nearly killed him, and he's a bold dog that has never shown fear of anything (well, except sheepskin coats, but that's another story...and a perplexing one!). He is afraid of her, though. On the occasions she's gotten into the same room with him, he runs into his crate right away--it's a defendable space for him.
I wish I had some advice for you, but other than what JessicaRabbit has already said, I don't. But I do know I didn't pay enough attention to the aggression between my two--I thought it would get better, or that it was just occasional so it was ok, and then I nearly lost a dog. Now I do keep them separate, and while that is not ideal, it is certainly better than a dead dog.
and yeah, I won't go into a Cesar Milan rant, but I find his training methods totally unacceptable, for all the reasons already mentioned.
Anyway, I hope things get better for you--your girl is just gorgeous, and it's so sad to think about her hurt or in pain.My life revolves around two Shibas and an American Akita puppy
Jessica: I keep telling my mom that keeping them apart like that won't help the situation, but it's "her and my dad's dog" so I can't do to much about that. I'll keep on trying though.
Both of you are right about that. When Kiyo went to Reese while he had ice, he grabbed a hold of her and she got scared(that was about 2 months ago). They were fine till a few days ago but she learned not to come close to him when he has something unless he invites her.
Kiyo is fine and we just have to move forward.
Kiyo and I had our last puppy class tonight. It was also her STAR Puppy Program test. We graduated puppy class and she past the test with flying colors! Next step beginners obedience class and the CGC Program test.
renae: sorry to read about the other problems with Reese and Kiyo. Hopefully it all works out. It's hard when your mom and dad feel their dog is just fine, and you know he isn't. I am starting a First Grade class with MoJo tomorrow and looking forward to it. Me and my husband have always trained all our dogs...and quite well I might add. They have always been well-mannered, listened well and aimed to please. MoJo on the other hand is a little more obstinate (for lack of a better word). He needs to obey better and listen to us at least MOST of the time. I don't know if that's going to get accomplished, but he's worth the time, effort and money to find out. At least there is no aggression issues :) thankfully! I SOOO do NOT like aggression problems.
Well it's been awhile. Been busy with the three dogs and field trips to ranches. Last week I had Kiyo's urine tested to see how she was doing. Yesterday my vet called me telling me that she still had the bladder infection. :( So now she's on new medicine and see if that works, if not than she will go in for an ultrasound to see if she has any stones that aren't showing up on x-ray or if she has any defects. My poor baby girl. And on top of that she started her first heat cycle on Sunday. So much fun. But other than that she's been doing fine.
