I enrolled Mika into a puppy class, and they gave a really nice and detailed socialization checklist. I think there might be one on the NK side, but thought it would be neat to post what the checklist given to me at puppy class is, and see how many forum members were able to get most of these checked off before their puppies hit 16 weeks of age.

People:
Adults
Babies
Toddlers
Children
Teenagers
Seniors
Both genders
Different ethnicities

People Wearing:
Umbrellas
Sunglasses
Hats
Beards
Helmets
Costumes
Punk Hairdos
Shaved Heads
Raincoats

Animals:
Friendly, healthy dogs
Puppies
Small pets (hamsters)
Large birds (geese)
Cats
Livestock (goats)

People in Uniform:
Police
Firefighters
Postal Workers
Vet clinic staff
Ambulance attendants
Crossing guards
Meter readers
Telephone worker
Couriers

People with:
Canes
Crutches
Legs in cast
Metal frame walkers
Wheelchairs
Guide dogs
Baby carriages
Baby carriers
Backpacks
Luggage
Wagons
Shopping carts
Limps or odd gaits
Erratic body movements

Athletic Folk:
Joggers
Skateboarders
Cyclists
Rollerbladers
Bike couriers
Toboggans and sleds
Snowboarders
Surfers
Wind surfers
Speed walkers
Spectator at 10k run
Kayakers/canoeing
People swimming
Hackysack
Martial arts

Motor Vehicles:
Trucks backing up
Screeching brakes
Cars backfiring
Airplanes & Helicopters
Street cleaners
Snowplows
Garbage trucks
Motorcycles
Delivery trucks
Skidoos & Seadoos

Outdoor Events:
Parade
Hot air balloon
People singing
Live music band
Farmers market
Beach party/bonfire
Santa Claus
Fairs & Rodeos
Sporting events
Mimes & Clowns
People dancing
Rush Hour
A rally/protest
Street Vendors

Environmental Hazards & Noise Pollution:
Sirens
Thunder & Lightning
Snow blowers
Fireworks
Snow
Rain
Wind
Airport
Loud Speakers
Building demolition/construction
People yelling

Strange Sights & Smells
Drunk people
Icecream truck
Strong perfume
Strong cooking smell
Hammocks
Swings
Scooters
Tricycles
Cigarette smoke
Skipping rope
Hula hoop
Kites, Flag/banners
Model airplanes/remote control toys

Construction Sites & Gardeners:
Jackhammers
Cranes
Front-end loaders
Bulldozers
Wheelbarrows
Garden hose
Sledgehammers
Power tools
Forklifts
Carrying shovels
Electric hedge shears
Sweeping with broom
Lawn mowers
Ride on mowers
Weed whippers
Sprinkler system

Different Environments:
Car Rides
Socialization class
Vet clinic
Boarding kennel
Groomers
Bank
Video store
Gas station
Boat rides
School grounds
Sporting activities
The beach
Toll booth
Shopping mall
Friend's homes
Public transit
Outdoor cafe
Country versus city
Elevators/escalators
Automatic doors
Pet supply store
Downtown
Hiking trails
The office
Petting zoo
Car wash
Walk after dark
A tunnel
A bridge
Busy intersection
Outside child daycare
Active railway
Crowd of people
Drive-thru
Drive-in-movie

Different Surfaces:
Stairs (up & down)
Sand
Wood
Ceramic tiles
Carpet
Ice
Slippery surfaces
Manholes and grates
Watery or wet
Grass
Gravel
Cement
Swinging Bridge
Wooden dock
Tarmac (not hot days)
Astroturf
Mud

I know this checklist is very long, and some of it can be done in one outing to the same place. I have been reading some statements on this forum that concern me deeply, and I think it is important that it is addressed.

Having worked nearly 20 years in dog rescue I really must express, BUYING a dog from a less than ethical breeder or pet store is in no way rescuing or helping the homeless dog issue. It is in fact one of the primary factors in CAUSING the homeless dog problem. Every time someone purchases a dog from a backyard breeder/pet store (any pet store)/or puppy mill it conveys to that business that there is a demand for their merchandise (I.E. puppies). They now have added incentive to continue producing more puppies.

All the while millions of dogs are killed daily because suitable homes cannot be found; MILLIONS, more than 80% pure bred, many of them puppies (admin Pam "Ryu" adopted Roxy at 9 weeks old from a rescue group, my friend Mitch rescued a 9 week old shiba from another group, my Moto was 6 months old when I got him, they are out their for the patient).

Now I have nothing against people getting dogs from responsible breeders. I do believe that there is a place for them in this world. A responsible breeder cares about the welfare of the breed, not just their dogs. They are trying to maintain the health and stability of the breed and are trying to keep it from going the way of so many other breeds (look at GSDs and their hips, or these mammoth labs with so many health and temperament issues). Most are active in rescue. A reputable breeder does not over breed their bitches, or breed hundreds of puppies. It is a labor of love.

I also cannot tell anyone what to do for themselves. If you are unwilling to wait on a reputable breeders wait list, and are unwilling to pay a reputable breeders prices, and do not want to go to an actual rescue group and save a homeless dog or puppy, that is absolutely your right and your choice. But as someone who has had to make the list of dogs to get put down, not because they were sick, not because they had issues, but because there was no room at the shelter, please do not try to justify that you are saving a future homeless dog.

The following links are excellent rescue groups that are always desperately looking for people who are willing to open their homes to a shiba in need.
http://national.shibarescue.org/listings/
http://www.shibarescue.org/
http://nycshibarescue.org/
http://www.savingshibas.com/
http://www.shibas.org/rescue.html
http://www.tristateshiba.org/

I joined the forum, now what?

If you have recently joined the forum or have been a lurker for many moons, you may be wondering what to do now.

Here are a few ideas:

Create an introduction thread.
There are a couple of reasons for this:
1.	This will allow the admins on the site to change you from a “new member” to a “member”. You may be asking what the difference is – well, a new member can only post in an introduction thread and a member can post in any thread. If you are unsure of what your status is, click on the tab titled “Your Profile” – beside your username will be a title. If it still says “New Member”, we are waiting on an introduction.
2.	An introduction gives you a place to tell us who you are. You have a chance to say where you are from (don’t feel obligated, if it makes you uncomfortable), if you have a Shiba Inu or other Nihon Ken, and a little bit about your dog and yourself.

Map yourself!
On your profile page, you can place yourself on the map. You can also view others on the map – who knows, there may be a Shiba owner close to you!
Here’s how to place yourself on the map:
1. Go to the “Your Profile” tab.
2. On the left-hand side is a list of options. Under “Account Options” is “Manage Map Location”. Click on it.
3. Enter your Latitude & Longitude in decimal format.
4. Click Save.

How to find your Latitude & Longitude:
1. Go to this web address: http://www.findlatitudeandlongitude.com/
2. Find yourself on the map by zooming in. Double-click on your location.
3. Beneath the map is a box that contains your latitude & longitude.

Please note: if you are in the USA the negative sign (-) should go in front of your Longitude. I assume this is always because everyone that had problems with being placed in China or Russia were from the USA and they left out the (-).

Post a Pic!
Here on the forum, we love pics of your shiba and any other pets you may have. Some people aren’t familiar with how to post pictures on this forum, so we’ve created a thread:
http://www.shibainuforum.org/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=4907&page=1#Item_1

It will walk you through how to post pictures from Photobucket and Flickr, as well as how to post videos from YouTube.

Join us on Facebook!
The Nihon-Ken Forum has a place on Facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=104399521094

Read the topics
There are a lot of topics on the forum – some of us have been around for a while. During our time here, we’ve posted a lot of stuff! Everything from nutrition to what you need for a puppy to training. We don’t pretend that we know everything – we bounce ideas off one another and come back to share what we learn from others. Some topics really get a few of us going – on both sides of the discussion. We are passionate about what we believe in and we hope you share that passion.

Inactive Threads
The threads on the forum are set to close after 90 days of inactivity. If there is a thread that is closed due to inactivity, but you'd like to post a question there - whisper or write on the wall of a moderator/admin to please re-open the thread.

Many of us have established friendships outside of this forum, to the point of driving cross-country to meet members and their special dogs. I think the longest period is 20+ hours. People have traveled from CA, NM, GA, and NY to WI, from VA, GA, MA, and NY to PA…just to meet some people and their dogs.

I hope enjoy your time that you spend on the forum. It’s a special place.

LJ

Ok methinks Kai really doesn't like his collar. He's had it since we got him and he doesn't object to us putting it on him (just to holding still that long). But he's always scratching at it. After a week he should be used to it. So I'm thinking the scratching is an indication that it's irritating him. It's just a cheap nylon collar from Petsmart cause we know he's going to grow out of it. But his scratching is proving a major distraction to him. And the walks definitely aren't fun with scratch breaks every 2 minutes and head shakes about every 5 feet.

Any suggestions on another type of collar? Has to double duty for leash attachment (for those times we gotta get him out the house *right NOW*)

Kai met his 1st dog today: a 3 month old pitbull my neighbor just got. I dunno what to make of it so I'll ask y'all.

Both dogs were on leash and we were out on the street (neutral ground). Kai had been out for a little bit and watered the sidewalk already. My neighbor came out with his pit. When the leaves got less interesting, the pups noticed each other. Kai came and sat by me, clearly wary but not reactive. The pit was also wary but bolder and approached us, using a telephone pole as a shield. Eventually the two ran out of leash, circling the telephone pole and were sitting across from each other. Kai took a step to the pit and cautiously sniffed his nose. The pit sniffed back and they did this for a few second.

Then I suddenly became glad I didn't get a Great Dane cause Kai took off like a rocket, trying to drag me along, and jumped up on our doorstep. He then kept peeking around the door frame at the other dog.

Any comments?

Kai has proven he can get up the stairs. Clumsily, comically. But what works... works. However he will not go down stairs. Not even down the single step at the front door. Our apartment has 5 steps to get up to the bedroom and bathroom. We carry Kai down those steps to the living room / kitchen.

Here's the question: when should we start having Kai try the stairs on his own? His Royal Highness may wish to have His servants prevent his paws from touching the stairs. But I'm thinking 'we're rewarding his behavior, constantly taking him down steps. And therefore will he will be reluctant to tackle any stairs, as he's showing with the doorstep. We haven't forced the issue seeing as without carpets Kai won't bounce very high or softly while learning.

So about when should we stop bearing His Royal's arse down the steps?

My girlfriend and I are trying to figure out a way for our puppy to alert us when he wants to go out to relieve himself.

Sometimes he does it on his own; he walks over to us and then walks to the door. And sometimes we catch him sniffing around on the carpet looking like he needs to go. But, of course, we've also made a few mistakes and had a couple accidents.

He rarely barks (three times in the week we've had him) so that is out. We were thinking of hanging a bell by the door and making him touch it before we take him out until he associates it with going out to relieve himself.

Has anyone had any luck with this method? Are there any other things we should try?

I thought I'd make this thread to see how it goes.

If you got any info, tips, or experiences from owning a shiba post them here.

I thought since there's a lot of new shiba inu owners and owners to be this would be a good thing to have up.

Shiba inu tend to be more mouthy as pups, but with work they can become nice dogs.

Shiba inu are not good off leash dogs there are a few who do well, but I don't think it's worth it you just never know one day a cat is across the street your shiba goes after it and bam!

Saya is pretty good with her recall with me working on it everyday, but I still don't trust her she gets some freedom on her 50 foot leash and she gets trips to the dog park some for her offleash time..

Shiba inu have high prey drive too they were originally used to hunt and they still got the instinct to chase..

Saya at 8 or 9 weeks old chased after two rabbits luckily she stopped when she got to the edge of the forest.. Saya also loves to chase leaves, birds, snakes, and deer.. Well I don't let her chase them, but she looks like she wants to go for them.

Shiba inu tend to be allergic to grains some can be allergic to a protein source or something in the kibble, or pollen and a few other things.

Fish oil is good for shiba inu I give Saya a squirt of grizzly salmon oil once a day.

Shiba inu tend to be clean dogs. Saya never needs a bath really dirt goes right off of her once she dries and she still smells nice.

Shiba inu blows their coats two times a year which is a lot of fluff for such a small dog..

Furminator is a great brush, but be sure to not brush too hard and too often you don't want to get the live hair..

Shiba inu tend to be more aloof to strangers.

Shiba inu pups needs lots of socialization puppy kindergarten, obedience classes, and lots of good experiences with people of all age, sizes, color, and dogs. Be sure the kids they meet listen well and that they are calm and don't make too much of loud noise.

Shiba inu are active and smart dogs be sure to provide them with enough toys, chew toys, and interactive toys, and exercise.

Shiba inu tend to show their affection in different ways there are some cuddlers out there, but most don't care to cuddle, but they still show their affection.

This blog has some good information and fun to read too.
http://shibainus.ca/tms-in-a-nutshell-or-blast-from-the-past/

I've heard positive/negative things about all kinds of diets.

What has worked best for you?

What would you recommend?

Why?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Alright, so when we first got Samson he was such a little angel. Sleeping all the time, snuggling, very quiet, and only going to the bathroom outside. 5 days later, he's a terrorist! He's definitly used to us, and chews on anything and everything he sees. I can only hide so much. lol.

When he starts biting us, I tell him no and put him in time out for about 3-5 minutes. He usually cries, or sometimes even falls asleep. The second I take him out, he's biting us again... and sometimes it really does hurt. I know they are very stubborn dogs and it can take awhile to get through to them that you're serious, but maybe there's something else i can do? I dont know whether to keep on doing this or try a different method. I want to play with him more n be a good mommy, but its hard when I'm constantly putting him on time out for biting me. suggestions?

So we've been warring with Bowdu's allergies all summer. We've been hitting him with Temaril-P (just finished his last of way too many doses), Benadryl, supplements of apple cider vinegar, fish oil, a diet of Primal Raw (he's now on his sixth bag at the rate of about one bag a week), and the cone of shame/pride. Also, occasional rubdowns with soothing skin-friendly lotion. We thought we had it under control. Things had not totally cleared up yet, but they were looking much better.

Then I went out on a limb and made a batch of home-baked beef liver and blueberry treats with sweet potato flour. We'd been avoiding chicken, he doesn't usually ever get beef in his diet, and I thought it would be fun to make him something of my own. And he loved the stuff! This was last Sunday or so. And on Wednesday or Thursday, I gave him a raw ox tail. Immediately, he started to really itch again, to the point where even the cone wasn't stopping him. And soon enough, he had managed to chew one of his feet bloody again.

So we're going back to the vet -- this is the fifth visit since March! -- and along with more antibiotics, I'm asking them to do a full thyroid test. I'm suspecting hypothyroidism based on the following symptoms --

* lethargy, tiring on long walks (which could also be a side effect of the Temaril-P)
* weight gain (he's at 33 pounds now, up from 29 pounds last fall, about 28 pounds the year before ; not a super dramatic jump in weight, but he is definitely chubby though he only gets 9 nuggets of Primal Raw a day plus minimal treats)
* skin infections (he's been treated for infections due to broken paw pads twice now, and this upcoming visit will probably be the third, as his paw gets really swollen and pink when he does manage to lick it -- believe me, we're trying to make sure he doesn't!)
* hair loss (his tail is still quite bushy, no "rat's tail", but there's been significant hair loss around his neck/collar area)
* musky, distinctive "dog" odor (he's a shiba! He usually NEVER smells like this!)
* discoloration of the skin (especially inside of his thighs and armpits, it's very pink and even dark gray/black in some spots)
* dry, brittle hair (his back and chest are fine, but the fur on his back legs is really rough -- it is often like this in the summer, so may be more associated with seasonal coat changes and not necessarily hypothyroidism?)

... I just see a lot of signs, so I want to get the test done so I can at least rule it out. Plus, it's a common problem with akitas from what I understand -- but maybe it hasn't been studied enough in shibas for it to warrant an official footnote in standard descriptions? The NSCA site calls hypothyroidism "not uncommon" in shibas.

Anyway, I wanted to start this thread to get an idea of what to expect from the upcoming vet appointment, what I should bear in mind or understand about the different kinds of tests (I was quoted $74 for a T4 test, or $134 for a "more detailed" test -- I read somewhere, forgot now where, that only a "more detailed" test would give conclusive results that could lead to a final diagnosis of hypothyroidism, so I need to make sure I'm getting that). Plus $166 for a full blood panel. Plus a $67 examination/consultation fee. And whatever they're going to charge for antibiotics...

Basically anyone else with any other experiences, please share. I'm desperate for information.

Part of me is almost hoping he DOES have hypothyroidism, so that there can finally be some kind of concrete answer to these skin problems that have gotten worse and worse every year.

Some photos of my little Kuma. He was born the 16th of april 2010.
(never been too good with photobucket and Html.. but I'll do my best)

Here are two pics of him before I got him. On the first one he's 16 days old and on the other one he's 26 days.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p222/Chanassa/Kuma/Darwin16dg.jpg

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p222/Chanassa/Kuma/Darwin26dg.jpg

We got him at 9 weeks. Cutest little thing ever. He settled right in and became good friends with everyone (except the cat.. which just doesn't like anyone but herself)

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p222/Chanassa/Kuma/DSC_0062.jpg

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p222/Chanassa/Kuma/DSC_0099.jpg

Just before he turned 12 weeks he started loosing his puppy coat and got some "grown up" hairs on his back. Now at 17 weeks he's looking almost all adult-like and most of his upper incisors are out and ready to be replaced.

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p222/Chanassa/Kuma/DSC_000502.jpg

He loves dog treats and his toys, so training him is pretty easy. So far he's learned sit, lay down and "gimme five", still having some problems with leash walking though ;)

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p222/Chanassa/Kuma/DSC01752.jpg

He's about 7kg, and just passed the cat in size. Guessing he'll settle down at around 10-12 kgs. We just started the rabies vaccine so I'll be able to take him with me to Hungary when school starts. He's gonna be well travelled ;)

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p222/Chanassa/Kuma/DSC_00662.jpg

So that's a little spam of the prettiest dog I know. I'll post some more as he grows up to be even more handsome.

(I not sure if the pics will show up or if it's just gonna be text, but I'll keep editing the post until it works ;) )

I'm asking out of curiosity. When I was first looking into the breed, I read that they tended to be on the quiet side, with the exception of the infamous shiba scream. But I don't think I have ever seen a more vocal puppy than my Mitsuko is. She barks at my dalmatian, barks at the cat, barks at my husband, talks back when scolded, and sometimes seems to just bark to bark (especially during her Shiba 500s). The only time she *doesn't* bark is when someone is at the door.

I don't really mind, though. My dalmatian has always been very vocal, so we are used to it. We are currently working on "that's enough" and she's a very fast learner, so I'm confident Mitsuko will pick it up quickly. But I thought I'd ask about other experiences with the Shiba's vocal abilities.

Should we leave Kai's collar on when we're in the house? What about his harness?

Right now it's obvious he's bugged by both. Not enough to chew or whine. But whenever he's wearing either he stops to scratch at them. Its interfering with any training as he'll stop even the most spirited play (and even the nipping) to scratch at the collar.

On the other hand, it's impossible to get him outside in a hurry cause putting the collar on takes a minute and the harness can take 5 (he's a wriggler). We're trying to housetrain him here (we've made mistakes that have led to him having accidents). So we need to be speedy about thing.

My girlfriend and I took little Oli (almost 10 weeks) to the vet today and received some very disheartening news.

We brought him in because he has been having diarrhea. We thought he was allergic to his food (Nutro Max) because of its corn contents. So we switched him over to Eukanuba Lamb and Rice Puppy mix. He seems to like it and his stool got a little more normal looking. But then this morning it looked very bad again. He was also sneezing and itching a bit ( we thought related to the food allergy). So to be on the safe side we took him into the vet today.

She said that food allergies are relatively uncommon in puppies and that the cause of his diarrhea is most likely worms. She said that the sneezing and coughing could be a little bout of Kennel Cough brought on by his vaccine.

She gave us worm medicine and an anti-biotic and told us to come back in a week to check on him.

It was a lot to take in but I thought we could handle it. Then she talked to us about his heart murmur. The little guy has one and it's unclear whether or not it will close itself. The vet doesn't think it will. She said that means he might need to have surgery to repair it. My girlfriend and I are crestfallen.

Has anyone had these problems with a puppy? Are there any good solutions?

I am trying to help this girl find a new home for her 7 mo old Shiba Inu. Please read below: Puppy is currently living in Manhattan (NY)

Hi
I am the owner of a wonderful 7 month old red and white Shiba Inu named Winston. My boyfriend and I bought him when he was only two months old, and it breaks my heart to have to put him up for adoption. Unfortunately, both of our jobs have recently become a lot more demanding, and there is an increasing possibility that we are going to move to London, where I am originally from. We just dont have the time to give Winston the attention and training that he needs and deserves.
We are looking for someone who loves dogs, and in particular Shiba Inu's to adopt Winston and give him a loving forever home.
Winston is VERY high energy, playful, loves to be outside and to run on the grass, and loves people. If you are looking to adopt a shiba puppy, or know of anyone that is, or can provide any advice on where to go to to find adoptive parents for winston, please get in touch - julia.bader1@gmail.com. We will not consider sending him to a shelter, so we really need to find loving parents for him.
He is Neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on all shots.

Also if anyone might be willing to foster that would be great :)

Pics:

So I am in the process of looking for new vet and a thought crossed my mind as I was trying to find reviews of local animal hospitals/vets. I was thinking about starting up a thread of vets that all of us Shiba owners would recommend. All of us are from different places and have different experiences. Potential Shiba (or other pets as well) owners can look here or if you plan on moving you can get a good idea on who's good and who's not. I'm from Vegas btw

Hello all! I have a few questions concerning some of the behaviors of my shiba Etsuko:

1. She sneezes A LOT. Mostly when she wakes up from sleeping, or in the morning when we all get up together for her morning walk. What could be the cause? Normal allergies? Are we setting our thermostat too low and freezing her out, giving her a cold?? Anything I can do, or should be concerned about?

2. She WILL NOT poo or pee ANYWHERE in our yard, including the back, front and side yards... What could be the cause of this? Her superior territorial nature, thus not wanting to soil her home? Or, is she not used to her surroundings yet (we've only had her for 1 month)?

3. What is the best way to discipline her when she has done wrong? I have read and seen that shibas learn quickly of their mistakes, as they do not like to disappoint their owners. So, should I only say "No," spank her bottom, whathaveyou when I catch her in the act? Or, at any time (will she remember what she did?) ?? I want to discipline her correctly and firmly, while avoiding developing a negative relationship with her.

All comments and advice are welcome!

Please let me know what you all think!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

I am having a hard time deciding what kind of dog bed to get. Selfishly, I want something attractive. The style is more of an issue.

I have found websites online that said you should watch how and where your dog chooses to sleep and find beds with those characteristics. Usually my shiba sleeps with his back against something....a wall, furniture, me. Whatever. So maybe something with a bolster is best. But sometimes he sleeps all flat and sprawled out...which makes me think that a flat pillow type bed would be better.

I want to get two beds...one for the bedroom and one for the living area. I know just where to put the one in the living area because he has a sleeping spot! But it will be right in view when people enter my house, so it'll have to blend with my decor. :)

Any advice? I wish I could take him to the store and let him try them and see what he likes, but obviously he's not going to nap in the dog bed isle. Sometimes he's such a mystery!

No, Kai hasn't gotten me to Sit or Roll Over on command... yet :-p I was wondering what changes in yourself or your lifestyle introducing a Shiba into your home has caused?

In my girlfriend Kai seems to be causing her to be more focused, consistent and attentive to detail. I used to kid her constantly with "Oooo... shiny!" cause she could be distracted so easily. But she's been extremely good with Kai and it's starting to bleed over into the rest of her behavior.

With me, I'd say I've started to be a bit more organized and a bit less of a slob. Until Yuen moved in 2 years ago, I lived like a smart bachelor: never bring anyone to the Ground Zero I called home :-p But things are now being put in their place and I'm cleaning up far more frequently (if just to cut down on things to distract Kai during training, like that spot on the floor). Nowhere near perfect since Yuen still has to hide the PS3 controllers for me to do the dishes tho :-)

This Friday we are going to meet a 2 month old Shiba Girl whose owner is giving her up because her older Peke does not get along with her. My Shiba boy "INU" is a delight. He is affectionate, always giving kisses, no fear of strangers and loves to play with other dogs. Other dog owners at my local dog run plan their walks around my schedule so their dogs can play with him. I've been spoiled rotten by Shiba Inu. When I first saw his temperent I knew I had to take him home and into our family. (BTW I have a degree in Behavioral Psychology which probably helped me recognize his potential). Hopefully, this new girl will be a sweetheart too. Her owners description of her behavior makes me think it might be a good match.

Here's some spam. I've used K9 advantage on him the moment he turned 8 weeks as well as putting a flea collar on him whenever he goes outside. He still seems to have fleas on him. Although, it's not excessive, maybe like 2 or 3 fleas I would randomly find on him.

My question is, what else can I do to prevent him from getting fleas? Is there some kind of internal medicine that prevents fleas? I'm already using external preventatives like the flea drops and collar, unless there are more that I don't know of. Also, is it okay to bathe them more than once a week to get rid of the fleas?

I'm using this flea trap as well. (Link below). It seems to work, however I'd still want to try something to prevent my puppy getting fleas in the first place rather than having to get rid of them once they are in my home.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.amazon.com/Victor-M230-Ultimate-Flea-Trap/dp/B000668Z96

My shiba Kumatora poops on the grass outside in the same designated area, and she does it in a normal manner (sniffs around a lot for the perfect spot first before squatting). But there are times when she deviates outside the norm, and I was wondering why.

1. When taking her out on walks, when we go down a busy road, she'll poop on the sidewalk without warning and it's usually soft "pudding"-style feces. She stops walking, squats and goes so quickly, I don't have time to move her to the grass on the side. She almost always does this, and sometimes twice -- and I always take her to her designated bathroom spot before walks and she relieves herself, so it's like...bonus poop. Is this because she's scared of traffic?

2. I read a suggestion on this forum to give a "time out" to your shiba when they're being bad -- putting him/her in a room or bathroom and closing the door, keeping them isolated for no more than 60 seconds. I began doing this, usually putting her in the bathroom for 30 seconds, and it seemed to be pretty effective... except she began pooping/peeing in the bathroom during time outs. Is this because she's scared/showing submission?

But where's the 4 Pawed Tornado?

I figure he's trying to settle into place. And really, he hasn't been home a full day. I hope this is appropriate to the forum.

Since we shiba owners know how uniquely challenging and charming this breed can be (har har), I thought it would be helpful to occasionally re-route Craigslist ads to this forum. I do this assuming that most people who post pet ads to Craigslist are private individuals and NOT rescues (though some rescues do post available dogs there - not my local shiba rescue though). So Craigslist ads don't necessarily duplicate listings from established rescues or Petfinder. And shiba listings on Craigslist are relatively rare, so I don't think this will clutter the board...

In cases where a shiba is listed as "free" or under $150 or so, I contact the person who listed the ad to suggest they surrender their dog to rescue. Rescue organizations will at least be able to give a full assessment of the dog's personality and screen potential adopters so that the dog has a lower chance of being rehomed in the future.

I also contact the person and ask if they have contacted their dog's breeder, reminding them that reputable breeders usually have it in their contract that the dog can and should be returned to them if at any point the current owner can no longer care for the dog. (This is news to most of the people I've contacted so far...)

I trust this forum more than I trust the general Craigslist patron to offer a shiba a good home. So if anyone amongst us connects with a Craigslist shiba, at least we know the adoption comes with a support network. =)

--

This one comes from the SFBay area (though I suspect it will quickly get flagged and removed, because it's appalling):

Black Shiba Inu male for rehoming (lafayette / orinda / moraga)
Date: 2010-07-09, 9:03PM PDT
Reply to: comm-fv3wq-1835045435@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

Koda is a loving 4 year old male Shiba Inu who needs a new home. What triggers your Shiba to do the Shiba 500?

Personally I think today the cat sleeping on his side of the bed was the trigger.. He got up on the bed and found the cat in his spot and he couldnt get the cat to move. So he decided everyone needed to be awake and up I love my Shiba puppy!

Ok, my girlfriend and I are having the first training argument: crate / house training. Every training book seems to cover getting the puppy into the crate, antcipating Puppy World War III. Kai will often pop in on his own if we leave the door open. We're working on getting that on command. But he has to master the stairs up to the bedroom

Here's where the argument comes in. I say we leave him in the crate, taking him out every hour. If he doesn't leave at least some liquid on the ground within 10 minutes, we come back into the house and crate him for another hour. If he at least waters the sidewalk then we praise & treat him outside and when we're back inside we play for a bit.

Her argument is this routine is boring Kai and he's intimidated outside. So when he is let out, he's so excited to be out that he forgets to relieve himself. Or he's so busy watching to make sure the big metal monsters don't jump onto the sidewalk that he doesn't go.

Her argument has the merit of Kai watering and weighting down the sidewalk more successfully. Mine is purely theoretical since we haven't done it yet with any consistency to see any results.

A couple facts about Kai:
* He's a sneaky wizzer. There is almost no indication he's going until the puddle spreads.
* He's impossible to interrupt. Loud noises and shouts of "No" won't stop him from emptying his bladder enough to not go once he's outside. I have a Batarang I could try... ;-)
* He's had liquid accidents in the house but never in the same spot cause we tag team him. One of us wastes our time with him outside while the other hits the area with towels + steam mop + Nature's Miracle.
* No solids have landed in the house
* No accidents in the crate.
* He has given a 'tell' but not consistently. A couple times he's gone over to the door , once standing up on his paws along the seam. But I think we've missed our chance at making that consistent with the mistakes we've made.

I understand the importance of socialisation but I just realised how confused I am about socialisation and vaccinations.

I'll be collecting my puppy at 8 weeks old and from what I understand, I'll be heading straight to the vet for the first round of vaccinations.

Apparently the second (final) round of vaccinations is a few weeks after when he is about 10 weeks?

I hope this sounds correct so far?

The socialisation bit I'm confused with is... I understand its good to slowly expose the dog to stimulus like people, traffic and other dogs etc and someone told me that in the first few weeks, that I should do this by carrying the puppy in my arms as I take him out for socialising.

Now this may sound really silly, but as well as carrying him in my arms... can I put him on the floor and let him walk on the pavement - before his final jabs?
I thought I would have to leave it until his second round is done before letting him walk on the pavement/go onto the grass?

At the beginning I did not hear growling or hissing. But now I occasionally do. Besides If it was for her she could play/chase maya cat all day. After a while it gets tiring to see this.
I'm really confused!! I actually don't want her to do this behavior. My husband thinks they are playing and thinks that puppy will soon find out that Maya doesn't like it. He thinks it will go away. I hope so! We are not on the same page on this one. I have seen Maya cat using her nails or she comes back and provokes the pup.

Should I let them continue doing this or stop it immediately. I have tried correcting her like saying OFF and holding her stable or poking her (not too hard more like one tap) . She doesn't listen. Actually I lifted her away right now and she tried biting my hand and was pissed. It's not like her normal self.
I'm hoping this chasing behavior goes away.

What do you think? Should I let it go and let them play? Thanks!
This coming Saturday I'm taking her to the bbq and there will be cats (not on the bbq).

I'm leaning towards just putting food down three times a day instead of leaving out a full-days worth of food right there in front of him.

But with water, every time he takes a sip of water, he goes pee. And he doesn't even give any warnings. Usually, my other dog would sniff the carpet for 30 seconds before squatting down and going pee, but my shiba would literally just go pee in any location, any position.

So I guess I have a two part question: should I just leave water readily available in risk of my shiba going pee literally 2 seconds later? and is it normal for my shiba to not give any warnings before he has to go pee?

It's really annoying how I simply cannot tell when he is going to go pee on my carpet. By the time I notice that he is peeing, it's too late to quickly carry him to the puppy pad and obviously there is no use in yelling at him after it had happened.

So yeah, I need help with Buckley -_-

If you have a dog that is food motivated, the Kong Wobbler is a GREAT toy. It took Kuma about 5 - 10 minutes to figure it out, but he sure has fun with it. You can put up to one cup of food in it(a meal) or just a few treats. It takes some creativity for the dog to get the treat out of the hole so it keeps them occupied for quite some time.

Hello everyone my name is Carlos and after 4 years of careful consideration my wife and I are finally proud Shiba parents.

A little about us..… we live in San Diego, I am 28 and I work from home fulltime. My wife Gloria “27” and I have been married for only 3 months but dated for 5 years. This is our first pet as a couple and we are both very excited. My wife’s office is a cool 5 minute walk from our condo which also has a huge dog park onsite.

A little about our Shiba… we decided on a little girl who was the second born from a litter of 4. Dad is brown & red retired show dog while mom is crème. Our little pup is brown. She is 7 weeks old and will come home with us next week. My wife and I have already set up her area complete with puppy crate, puppy bed, toys, blankets, bowls and doggie litter box. Our plan is use the training pads on top of a liter box for now. Once we feel she doesn’t need the pads she can use the box with litter like a cat. The good news is that the breeder already has her trained to go on the pads.

We still have to pick a name for her and will probably come up with something once we have her settled in at home. Here is a picture of my wife and I with our new baby girl.
